So I've had a few comments that I don't look happy in my photos recently. The thing is I find it hard to take a smiley picture where it doesn't look forced

So are you more likely to message someone that has smiley pictures?

I don't let it put me off sending people messages as I know how hard it is to take a decent picture.

It's a weird one.....

Some ladies look incredibly beautiful when they're not smiling.

Just about any lady looks more beautiful when they do smile.

Guys look friendly and approachable when they're smiling.

A lot of guys look like crimewatch e-fits when they're not smiling.

Forced smiles can make you look a bit of a wally.

If in doubt, slap on a trout pout

I haaaate my smile! Adam loves it but it sucks! All of the smiles in our pics are 'picture smiles' lol. I still don't like them but I like them more than my real smile lol.

I hate smiling for photos, I don't like my smile anyway but it always seems forced. Hence the slightly ridiculous poses.

I'm not much of a smiler either. Find it hard to take a natural smile so I just go with my standard face.

Yes exactly I try to look away from the camera and just take a few pictures and usually I find a natural looking one. Although there are always ones that I capture mid blink with my to guess sticking out (I've no idea)

Not for Fab per se - I mostly find that people who are not posing for a photo look better than those who are (unless models). A natural smile is something that's very touching for me - I warm to people easily. A constructed smile is different.

For men on fab, I've seen a gazillion selfies where they look almost like they're grimacing - they'd probably better reception if they were smiling.

Op - I'd probably ask your friends if they'd take some natural shots of you, over a few weeks, then compare the results.

Watch funny cat videos as you are taking the photos (no really)

There is a great photo series where the photographer takes a photo before and after telling them they are beautiful. A natural smile makes a picture much most of the time.

I prefer smiling faces. However, I think I read a study somewhere that said that men and women generally prefer women to be smiling in pictures while they prefer men to be brooding or serious. When I think about it, I think there's some truth in this.

I personally think I look better in pictures when I smile and I'm usually more inclined to feel like snapping a pic when I'm in a smiling/happy mood anyway.

I rarely have my head in pictures anyway so it doesn't matter if I'm smiling or not. I do have a big cheesy grin in one of my private face pics, mainly because I was laughing when I took it. In the others I attempted to look either sultry and just succeeded in achieving a mardy cow face. Similar to resting bitch face, just grumpier.

As much as we love smiley people, selfies just never look genuinely happy so we pay attention to eyes in selfies . You have very warm, beautiful eyes . Pay no attention to anyone who thinks you don't look happy

I do this, too. Camcorder on a tripod and leave it running for 10 minutes, while you mess about. It can capture all the fleeting expressions, which are notoriously hard to catch on a photograph - then just step thru and screenshot the best frames.

I work in a museum, where kids can sit in aircraft cockpits, while parents take photos of them.

One poor kid sat there, while his parents kept telling him - 'dont smile' - 'stop smiling'... admittedly the boy's smile was an amusingly wonky grimace but I thought it was awful for parents to tell their child not to smile.

Most kids are allowed to run around the place, with big grins and eyes full of wonder.
