When it comes to God I don't buy the traditional view. If He/She/It exists and can create anything and knows everything I don't see why me getting on my knees and saying thanks would mean a thing to something so infinitely powerful. Surely they wouldn't have an ego?

If there is a 'traditional' God, why would he or she need Angels? An all powerful all knowing omnipresent deity wouldn't need help.

If there is fate or destiny then how could a God intervene? If intervention is possible then fate or destiny is impossible.

I believe that a traditional God can't co exist with fate and destiny.

As much as we like to believe we're steering our own course through life, we all know that at any minute of the day the bubble can burst. Sometimes there is just no rhyme or reason to any of it and we have little or no control over events. So no, I don't believe things happen for a reason. It's just a case of things happen. Sadly, that can include incredibly cruel, life changing events. How we come through these moments is what ultimately defines us. Even in the deepest pits of despair though there is hope and a reason to believe that tomorrow will be a better day.

I grew up around religion. I have many religious mates (Christians and Muslims). It's all bogus. But I don't criticise as long as it does not harm. If your believe is harmless then believe what ever gets you through the day/difficult patch. I know people whose faith has helped loads in bad times.

But personally it's all a load of Bullshit. I worked that out the moment I really started to study the bible. I can't see how anyone who has truly read the bible can still believe. It's so backwards and contradictory. Plus the God in the Bible is a horible head case, so I hope it's not true. I put my faith in science and reason. I am happy to accept we can explain everything. I would rather say these things are unexplained that lable them as evidence of the supernatural or intelligent design.

There has been scientific research for millennia:

Eg;

The Chinese were inventing magnetic compasses in 300BC ( if not earlier) gunpowder, doing astronomy and had worked out the solar system several centuries BC; and developed rockets, for instance. Archimedes was developing engineering principles ( his displacement theories, , structural engineering etc ) in 200BC, he had effectively worked out Newtons laws already, and developed a form on Newtons laws ( but demonstrated them in a different way).

Whoever discovered fire, and the wheel, to name but two, did it by research and experimentation.

You can't dismiss alchemy; it was a valid avenue of research; it wasn't just " trying to make gold" it was a scientific exploration of matter.

Herbalism was simply medical scientific research, using what was available : perfectly valid in those days; and indeed, the modern pharmaceuticals owe much to early " herbalism"

What's the philosophical difference between a herbal medicine, and any opiate medicine ( which is simply obtained from opium poppies)?

Although I don't belive in kama perse there is obviously a real aspect to it.

If one person has a door held open for them and it makes them feel happy that somebody went out of their way to do it.... Then they're likely to repeat this bit of behaviour that they enjoyed to somebody else, eventually that chain follows through to an awful lot of people holding doors open for each other.

Unfortunately it works just as well in reverse and can lead to everybody being horrible to each other.

..then it's in your imagination...

...therefore, by definition, it doesn't exist..!

I believe in 'something', it helps me stay positive, but I don't believe in the dogma of organised religion.

There is so much we don't know that none of us can state whether or not these things exist or not.

We don't know if the universe is deterministic in nature. IE at the point of the Big Bang, was the universe set in motion and everything that happens is a consequence of that. Therefore the future is effectively set in stone. If that is so do we have free will.

Somethings we just are unable to do. We know the building blocks for life, yet we can't create it from the raw materials. We can not create life from inanimate objects.

What actually is life? And if we are just a bunch of electric impulses and chemicals, does it matter if we murder people? Its no different to smashing a rock.

Is there a God? Nobody has the monopoly on knowledge in this respect.
