Firm believer in that your health is in your hands here. It makes me laugh when people who eat bad, live bad, don't pay attention to their needs on every level think that when their system crumbles a trip to GP followed by prescription will miraculously cure them of all alignments. Funny

Nope, it's that difficult to get an appointment with my GP that I'd rather just wait out whatever ailment I wanted help for in the first place.

Yes I am but my lifestyle doesn't contribute to my health conditions. I lead a healthy lifestyle but they are chronic, managed by medication.

Change your diet and see how it goes then. Yes I do realise how silly that sounds but it only sounds silly to a brain that's been conditioned from the cradle to think that when in need the GP is the first step to recovery.

My words won't be enough, but I can reccomend you just one book of many that I've read about the issue - Mind over Medicine by Lissa Rankin.

Also here's her TED speech so you can have a glimpse of what's what:

Do you think that you are the only one who knows this? Do you know anything about my lifestyle, health conditions, what alternative therapies I use, etc? Why assume you are the only one who has thought about this? Maybe some of us who have chronic illnesses have too. Why would you assume you have gone through the thought process and no one else has? Don't be taken in by all that propaganda, weigh both sides and one thing I don't do, it try to dictate to people without knowing their circumstances or what they have done and are doing.

Try having chronic health conditions that don't get affected by diet. I still try and convince myself that diet is key and I spend ages messing around with what I eat to see what does and doesn't work.

And it's exhausting, stressful and makes me feel guilty when I get it wrong. I've found certain foods make me worse. But ultimately I followed a strict exclusion diet (also incredibly healthy) for around 4-6 months and other than losing a ton of weight, it didn't do an awful lot.

There does come a point where you say "enough".

I don't think blaming people for their illnesses is helpful or useful. No one chooses to be ill.

I'm on a gluten, wheat, diary and sugar free diet. Avoiding any processed food and making things from scratch. I've only been doing it 7 weeks but haven't had the "rush of energy" I was promised! Other than dropping some weight (which is a positive thing but not the main reason for me doing it), I've not noticed any benefits yet. I had a hysterectomy 6 months ago and so I'm still struggling with the aftermath. I also have Fibromyalgia and M.E. so think it's just going to take a lot longer for me. I came off my painkillers and antidepressants about 4 months ago and I'm really struggling. Unfortunately changing your diet is a positive step but it's certainly not a magic cure.

When you have a chronic illness so you know how many well meaning people say "have you tried x y z" and offer all sorts of conflicting advice? It's ridiculous. When you've spent 5 years and a lot of time and effort chasing alternatives, and that promised "cure" again doesn't work for the 100th time you stop listening to people who are clueless.

Some of us are just born with fucked up immune systems. We're not all born 100% healthy and designed to stay that way.

Looking after your body doesn't fix everything and it's insulting to people to say it does.

Imagine telling someone with a missing limb that eating more fruit and veg would fix that? Think about what you're saying.

People are bound to be defensive when confronted with aggressive, confrontational, presumptive arrogant 'arguments' and that is why discussions like this never go well. If you took the time to ask questions and understand other points of view people would have much more respect for you and your lifestyle choice.

I am type 2 diabetic and do taken medication at the moment however the lifestyle changes I am making will hopefully result in my being taken off of them. It takes time to reverse a lifetime of bad choices and there will be relapses along the way. To simply stop any medication without making changes first is fool hardy and dangerous.

I have a friend that is chronically ill and requires constant medical tests and various other constant procedures... someone that they know recommended going vegan

Until you know someone's intimate medical knowledge don't pass judgement on individual requirements. If eating healthily works for you then well done *slow hand clap*

There's a lot of doctors in my family and one thing I've never been allowed to take in my life is antibiotics for sore throats even when it's a throat infection. Simply because there is little clinical evidence to support that they help it clear up any faster than just leaving it be, but everyone still demands them.

I think a lot of people lack common sense tbh and that's the root of this problem - although I don't believe that all GPs problems are as a result of this kind of thing, there are other factors in play too. Some people do really take the piss out of the NHS as a system.

Funny they are still seeing me and taking up to 20 tablets a day and actually have dangerously high cholesterol and blood pressure, some even die.

I am overweight and eat the wrong things but i don't take a single pill, my gp calls me in as i don't see her and i have low cholesterol and normal Blood Pressure.

I think we all need to look at how we live not just big people.

I am a long term vegan but I don't preach. Back in the day, people preached to me, and I dint like it. That was before being a vegan was fashionable. You have to take it seriously and mix and match foods to get your complex proteins and various vitamins and minerals. It isn't easy. Interestingly, I didn't bring my children up as vegans (my mum cooked for them too and I didn't think I dshoudl impose my choices on them) but tow of them (the two who are adults) have now become vegans out of choice. It is much easier to do this today. My health conditions have nothing to do with being a vegan, and its neither here nor there ... but I agree, its very important to realise it isn't the be all and end all. Nothing is that easy

Ate healthy, kept fit. Got brain tumour and died 3 months later. Is there a diet for that ?

It's a shame the OP hasn't found the dietary requirements for stopping condescending behaviour yet.

I think posts like this turn people off to the potential health benefits of changing lifestyles to ease medical conditions, as in a lot of cases it can assist.

Natural and raw and vegan and any other combination of excluding specific food groups don't solve every problem. Anyone who thinks so is an ass.

Whatever good point can be made about lifestyle changes has been lost in this post by the attitude. Shame because it could have been a good topic.

I have lived an 'alternative, anti establishment' lifestyle for much monger than you, OP, and to be h honest, now everyone is jumping on that particular bandwagon, I think you need to rethink who exactly is owned .... as a few other posters have said, many of us have experience and weighed things up and come to our own opinion. Again I ask, what makes you think you are the only one who has thought about these things?

So have your full english and a few pills for the heartburn that will follow in the meantime I'll drink some kale/banana smoothie

And what about the long term effects of being vegan? as many a years down the line many vegans have to pop vitamins to give the body the nutrients it's missing from the food items you don't eat and many vegans can't then change their diet to start re digesting those missing items as their bodies have adjusted to not having to do so

What's working for you now may not always do be careful what you preach

Nothing is that easy "

I wasn't referring to you when I made the preach comment as I'm sure you've guessed

I'm not critiquing your lifestyle choice but humans are a species classified as omnivores and there's a reason for that

Yes. There are people like that. There are also people who need to rely on medication to keep them alive. The two aren't the same. I don't understand why some have taken what the op said to heart if they are not eating and living badly which is contributing to their ailments. That's what i took the op to mean anyway.

I have MS. My lifestyle didnt cause me to have. I do try to eat healthyly most of the time but sometimes I think balls to it and a juicy kebab or pizza. I dont currently take medication for it as the side affects are worse than the symptoms. But believe me when that situation changes I'll ask for medication.

I am chronically ill. I need an organ transplant. If I don't have one, I will die.

When I first got poorly, I was in the gym 3/4 days a week, running around 40km along side other classes.

I ate well, drank enough water and looked after myself.

My body is still shafted. I'm kept alive by various medication. Sadly, without a transplant there is no cure. It appears that all the diet changes in the world don't stop you being a monumental bellend either.. shame!

Q: how do you tell someone is a vegan?

A: Don't worry. They'll tell you!

Sorry, just had to add that And to the vegans on this thread, I have to say, that takes some dedication. I couldn't do it. My son was vegtetatian for about 8 years, but had to go back to being an omnivore recently as couldn't get enough protein in his body. After a sudden condition resulting in him having 5 neuro operations in 6 days, including 6 hours of brain surgery on his 21st birthday he is now lactose intolerant and so can't eat much cheese. He also can't take soy due to hormone issues so tufo and many meat substitutes are out. In the end he realised that giving up being vegetarian and eating meat again was his only realistic option of having a healthy life and not just subsisting on nuts for protein.

I'm all for helping yourself and alternative medicines, there is however a place for conventional medicine. Even if it's sometimes a short term measure. Some long term chronic conditions, you need tablets or other types of medication for life. I don't think most people like popping loads of pills, but sometimes it's a necessity to stay active and relatively healthy.

There isn't a one size fits all approach for everyone.

"Q: how do you tell someone is a vegan?

Matt, I don't normally tell you I am vegan as I dont like preachy meat eaters so I am not a preachy vegan. I told the OP as he let's vegans down by banging on about it. How do you know if a swingers is on the thread ,... they'd tell you, etc, could be the same for any group. Anyone who wants to seriously be a vegan needs research into complex proteins and vitamins and how to get them. I dont replace proteins with nuts. There are loads more choices these days I am not vitamin D deficient, I know this because I was tested, but plenty of people who eat meat are too. Dont be judgemental about vegans or put them all under the same heading ... same for meat eaters, how does it feel if everyone is told they are the same. We aren't ....

"Yes I am but my lifestyle doesn't contribute to my health conditions. I lead a healthy lifestyle but they are chronic, managed by medication.

Change your diet and see how it goes then. Yes I do realise how silly that sounds but it only sounds silly to a brain that's been conditioned from the cradle to think that when in need the GP is the first step to recovery.

You don't know anything about my health conditions or my diet. So don't be random or disrespectful

Exactly - on defense right from the start. How typical

Good luck, another lady who is in the same diet group as me is in the same situation and after 4 weeks the GP said she could come off two of her tablets! x

It's not funny though is it. We need to educate people that frequently their health is in their own hands.

Obesity is a huge issue so is alcohol consumption yet both are seen as something that people have no control over. The issue is far more complex than you describe.

You might not like how he says it, but there is an important discussion to be had underneath it all nevertheless.

Filling a thread because you don't like it isn't allowed and is not the answer, surely?

Not everything is in our hands. Sometimes things out of our control can happen, and we can only look to our gp for help. I don't think being flippant about it is the way to address it and empathy goes a long way.
