south wales and gloucestershire

i now this has nothing to do with swinging,but my nan is 85 and had a hospital op this morning at 9,30 and she gets the bus there about 15 mile to the hospital,but was told by stagecouch that she could not get on the bus,because people cant use there bus passes till after 10,this country is a disgrace,any comments

It is not a right to have a bus pass.

On peak journey times there are people wanting to get to work, who will lose money, if not their job, if they don't get to work on time.

In the days when bus passes in Scotland were 'off peak' only you could still use the pass early in the morning if you had a hospital appointment card in your hand proving you had to be in a certain place at a certain time.

Most older ppl i know are well aware of the local rule,it's 9 round here.Perhaps she is getting forgetful,or needs more help than you realise. Hope you can convince her to let you help next time.

It isn't the fault of the Bus Service operator. Up to a few months ago, pensioners had passes which they could use at any time of the day, unlike before when they could only use them after 9.30am or 10am dependent on the area of the country. This was part of the previous Labour Government's Transport Policy. To pay for all those free journeys, all UK bus operators were refunded the costs by the government through local councils.

Now with the Tories having come into power, that payment for the free rides has been scrapped by the government, and local councils in these cash strapped days, are not picking up the tab.

That is the technical reason; the bus companies have no choice, but to charge and in turn elderly passengers have to pay!

London Freedom pass holders recognise that and although some will try to get on the bus during peak times when they're not allowed on they get off - and quite rightly so!

whilst there are some things wrong with this country its far better than a lot of places where lets be honest someone of the ladies elderly years wont have access to the NHS we have, and long may she continue to do so.

It is'nt Syria, Libia or many other places which most if not all of us on this site would be on a State 'list'.

If the country is a disgrace, there are a minimum of four options :

a) leave it.

b) stand as a candidate to change/improve it

c) observe the "rules" of society ( shite as they sometimes are ), or

d) ignore it the best you can.

Suggest to Gran that when she is next offered an appointment she tells them that she needs one later in the morning. Almost all hospital appointments are now done via choose and book and she can specify what time she wants to be seen.

nowt better than a good argument with a bus driver about fares ect ,,, i was on late bus in london last year,, i paid for the d*unk who didnt have enough money for the trip home ,,, if ya nan had been there i would have paid for her as well

We are about 15 mins outa Pontypridd and we do go to Crawley in west sussex 2-3 times a year so get in touch !!

My Auntie (whom i look after) is 80, she can't use her pass until 9.30 either, however she travel all over Lancashire & neighbouring county's on it, so i don't think it's too bad a deal, not being able to travel until 9.30 is just a minor inconvience, in fact i've just come back from taking her shopping at Tesco.

Every local health authority has to provide a minimum service of this kind, but, as with a lot of NHS services, you have to go digging yourself.

That isnt quite true, she wouldnt have been told she couldnt get on the bus. She would of been told that she had to pay half price for her journey instead of it being free. Unless its different in your area to the rest of the country

plus i think you can get the travelling expenses back at the hospital. But your in wales so it might be different. But they certainly wouldnt of told her she couldnt get on the bus but that she couldnt use her pass

lived in thailand china,taiwan,visited for a month or longer,india,nepal,laos,vietnam,cambodia,indonesia,phillipenes.

You dont want the list of visited for less than a month!

Not sure what relevence that has tho,simple comparison of gdp,birth /death rates,average age of leaving full time education,sanitation,health facilities,and so forth can be done without leaving your living room.

It is a shit policy actually.

You can't get on the first bus after 9.30 unless you have queued for at least 45 mins.

Badly thought out too. Popular tourist areas eg Peak District, Scarborough, Bournemouth etc were paid a block subsidy and yet were ferryng round for free, loads of pensionners from all over the place.

I know what you mean mate they can be stubborn cant they ,i had to explain to mine that as its easy for them to fall and there bones are brittle they really have to have lifts now as they dont want to be a burden do they ,she might just relent ...it worked with mine lol
