Good things or bad things?

Ive just spent a good 5 minutes reading a status on Facebook written by a friend who is worried about her child because they don't quite 'live up' to the guidelines..

I'm clearly no expert however id have thought each child grows and learns at a different rate, yes i accept there should be rough idea's of what is expected of a child/ what they can achieve etc however don't think it should be strict.

Good thing, its a guideline not criteria set in stone, enough to flag up any potential problems so the child can get help as early as possible.

Children all develop at different times, some babies walk at 10 months some at 2 years, both are completely normal. But i do think they can work as an indicter as to whether a child may have a genuine problem. There are lots of special needs children that if it is picked up can get beneficial help. There has long been help for children with learning difficulties but i believe now genuinely gifted children are being given right help as well now, where as before they where just treated like any other child.

But i know alot of parents worry if there child isnt developing the same as the next.

I only have one child, but i have been told by numerous friends with more than one child that on your second and more you become much more laid back and not so worried about when your child is developing

Whist all children grow and develop at different rates faiing to meet certain milestone within an age range can be a sign of an underlying problem.

However so many parents worry unnecessarily ,forgetting they are GUIDElines, not the 10 commandments. When i was teaching i lost count of the number of "the book says little johnny should be doing this..."conversations i had.Athough the "My mother in law says...rants were always fun!"

If the school/nursery./care provider has flagged up a problem, she will be concerned, but they would not do it without a good reason. For example speech delay may be caused by hearing problems. It's incredible what grommets can do for a child who isnt talking.

We began on the road to betting our own son diagnosed with Autism when it was realised he was not moving from playing alongside to playing with other children.

My sons hearing problems werent picked up for ages, he would move next to music or television and to the front of the class, making us think it was an eye problem. When finally went to proper hearing clinic he only had 20% hearing, soon as he had gromits he was completely different but he did have to have three lots put in in total

as the others have said they are guidelines .. all children develop at their own pace.. most teachers/ trained nursery workers ( and i was one) will listen to a mothers instinctual worries , so its always good to talk to them, My daughter always had trouble with mixing with other kids and paying attention, finally she was digonosed with ADHD, and got the help she needed, but took a long time because the teacher just put her in the Naughty child bracket... ( old teacher.) as soon as she moved to a new school with a new teacher we got all the help she needed.. because she wasnt where she should be devlopmentley.

its a balance of all things.
