Going round and round in your head, you can almost hear the cogs whirring , when you try and sleep and you can't , what do you do to stop the gears turning ?

Brighton - even Hove!

Read a book take your mind of it by distraction. You can trick your mind into being sleepy too if you're having trouble sleeping.

If I'm in bed and can't switch off and go to sleep. I play the alphabet game in my head. I choose a subject such as bands, vegetables...and think of as many as I can for each letter.

Sad, but works for me.

I never remember getting to the end, so I must fall asleep, probably through boredom.

I close my eyes and lie still and do deep breathing exercises..

They calm me down and relax me... and more importantly they clear my mind

Music, very quietly in the background, just loud enough to distract my brain.

It's known as 'white noise therapy' and it keeps the brains attention focussed in the sounds rather than your wandering thoughts which allows you to fall asleep.

Same principle as the cd's you get with whale song or rainforests etc if you go to a salon for a massage x

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

If you've tried the background noise, deep breathing, counting etc. and they haven't worked then get up and do some balance exercises. Your brain will concentrate on that and cut through the thinking.

I write the alphabet with my raised foot and then swap to the other leg. You then need to relax again so lay on the floor with your legs straight up against the wall and concentrate on your breathing.

I squirt my bed with lavender to help me relax.

I play golf in my head, start the driver in the first and go from there.

Funnily enough I always seem to play as badly in my head as I do in real life.

I find valium helpful as a last resort.

Most of my fab time is early morning when I can't sleep. (Like right now). I'm sure it's not helping.

Sometimes I'll just get up, make a cup of hot chocolate, (or tea if it's morning) grab a pencil and paper and concentrate on thinking the subject through until I can get it straight in my mind. Putting things on paper just seems to help.

(But I'm sure wanking is meant to release soporific hormones too. )
