I think the concept of having a festival celebrating everything we are grateful for is a good one .... let's call in harvest festival or succot?

Me too, I never have got it. I did decorate last year for the first time, but I wouldn't do it again. X

In the middle

We use to join in when my sons were younger, put lanterns and pumpkins in the windows etc, dress up and share sweets out, not so much now they are in their 20's

It doesn't really effect my life in a negative enough way for me to actively dislike it.

Out of all the pointless holidays (pretty much all of them) it's one of the better ones.

i don't love or hate it really, but i can't be fussed with decorating and all that crap..it's just another way of parting folk from their money these days.

couple of quid on sweets for the kids who knock and that's it.

American? Nope. It has its roots in Celtic harvest festivals.

I think it's great for the kids to dress up but it has gone very Americanised over the last couple of years...

I'm less into the kiddie crap facet to halloween, more into it being a festival of mortality. It isn't the only one, Mexico has the Day of the Dead, quite a few cultures celebrate with the remains of their ancestors.

actually its also a celtic/ worldwide thing..it originated from honouring our ancestors and asking for their protection through the winter, while thanking them for the harvest. its not an 'american' thing and if people were more grateful in this world it would be a nicer place to live..thats halloween for me..

It is an American import, fully commercialised by the supermarkets and many others. Demonic, not for me...thank you.

Correct;

The actual " day" is the Chtistian " all saints day (1November ) other wise known as All Hallows' day -which in turn is " borrowed from pagan and pre- Christian culture; which was a day celebrating and commemorating the dead and our ancestors.

On the continent of Europe, that day is widely celebrated, and in many countries it is a public holiday: and everyone visits the cemeteries to pay respect to the ancestors.

Halloween ( from "Hallows evening") being the evening before, was regarded as the night when " lost souls" tried to find rest. Hence the ghost myths and suchlike.

In mideaval times it was feared, as it was believed that these tortured and lost and evil souls would try to occupy the living; hence the use of lanterns etc to ward off the evil spirits
