Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

As I was driving this morning I passed through the well-to-do Jewish community and saw everyone dressed in their Sabbath best. I had a little flashback to when people used to dress up on a Sunday and felt a little saddened that Sunday best is rare now and Sunday clothes are usually for slobbing around.

Then I remembered the cheap, scratchy fabrics and how uncomfortable it was to sit through church in them and then keeping them neat and clean all day for fear of being told off.

Nostalgia - it ain't what it used to be.

What's your rose tinted memory?

"Long summer holidays from school, it never rained. "

Well, to be fair, for us (and others our age), it really didn't for at least two years.

God yes, the scratchy clothes for church in a Sunday morning. Then having to keep them on for the weekly trip to nan and grandads in the afternoon.

That Britain in charge of its own destiny was so much better than today.

Then I remembered the 3 day week, racial conflict, illegal homosexuality...

Effluent on the beaches... But let's not take this into a politics forum thread; that's a whole different rose tinting of Fab fora BB and PB.

No shops open on Sundays. Ahhhh I loved that, the fact that it was a day of just being, you know 'still' somehow.

That is one that I do miss. I know the world has shifted but I really enjoy visiting places where Sunday is still a day of rest.

Fair enough, but I wish we'd just stop messing around and let all shops open all the time, I find it ridiculous that my nearest Sainsburys can be open as long as it wants (it's a 'Local') but that it's big brother up the road can't.

I think we have allowed a lot of things to shift and then get used to them. I refused to go shopping on a Sunday for the first 10 years and then drifted into it, like everyone else.

People used to be respectful and polite to each other. Kids respected their elders. Everyone was happy.

EVERYONE had to be quiet for the pools. Do you remember Spot The Ball in the papers?

My rose tinted memory is before everyone had cell phones and not everything in life was being videoed and photographed. It aall seemed more relaxed and in the moment.

But then I remember having to walk miles in the middle of the night because our car broke down on the highway and we didn't have a cell. And fifty other similar stories.

It always seemed to snow as a kiddie, every year. There would always be a chance to go sledging every Winter. Now it happens one in three, maybe one in four years.

I said on another thread earlier that Doctor Who Tom Baker style was AWESOME as a kiddie. I've watched the repeats recently and, well, they weren't as good as I remember them!

My school memories are largely very positive and happy. Somehow I've managed to blank out liver and bacon for dinner and lumpy custard for dessert.

And that time I fell head first off my bike and half my face was one massive scab.

The always on, always available culture that has come with smart phones has had a detrimental effect on all our lives. I worry about the young people I know who live every moment via the screen; it hasn't happened unless there is a picture or video posted somewhere with a group chat about it.

I resisted getting a mobile until my car blew up on the slip road as I was getting on to a motorway. No one knew where I was, I wouldn't have been missed for at least three days and the emergency phones don't appear to be on the slip roads.

I had lovely school meals. Mainly because our school cook was from the same part of the World as me and cooked food I knew.

There's probably a few people reminiscing about their exotic school meals.

I remember those school days in the summer when you'd lie out on the school playing fields in the grass with the sun beating down, making daisy chains and talking about *boys*....

(might just be me)

Playing fields? We had concrete.
