Haggling - need advice

So I've got a mate who has a shop. He's selling me something from this shop. He's quoted me a price but I know I can get it cheaper elsewhere....

I don't want to give my business to anyone else if I can help it, so I want him to match the price.

I'm picking up the thing I'm buying today....

Should I message him first and ask him to price match, or go into the shop and haggle in front of the other customers?

Usually I'm cold as ice on shit like this, but he's a mate so it's awkward.

Am I approaching this the wrong way?

I always try to avoid doing any business with friends or family.

It came back to bite me in the ass!

Your friend may have a reason for charging more for the item than elsewhere. Maybe they are getting the item at higher cost price.

Is it too late to pull out the sale with friend and just purchase somewhere else?

You don't want to take your business elsewhere but you do want to take money out of your friend's pocket by trying to get him to lower the price for you?

Just buy them cheaper elsewhere,,,,,

Your friend wouldn't be in business unless he exercised financial discipline..... he'll buy his stock from the cheapest provider, so if he's a loyal friend I'm sure he won't mind you doing the same..

If it isn't a massive difference in price, just buy it from your friend, pay that little bit extra, but relax in the knowledge that you've given your business to a friend instead of a faceless corporation who wouldn't know you from Adam. That sale could be the difference between your friend making or not making a profit that week.

Personally think you should have done the haggling before you arranged to pick it up.

I'd have got the best price initialy without going into the shop I would have messaged him saying hey mate I've seen a xyz on the internet for £x is this something you can do ?

What kind of price difference is he asking for ?

Tell him you've found it cheaper elsewhere,would he still expect you to buy it from him knowing he's more expensive?! He may be disappointed,but he wouldn't be a great friend if he does.

When we used to by products from a wholesale merchant we often noticed that the same things could be bought retail at a lower price.

Your friend may have had to pay a higher price for what you are buying than the other shop.

If you really are a friend pay what your friend is asking, if he/she is a friend they will not try to rip you off

Forget about doing business with your mate, he is in business to make money, not as a charity,

he has a shop, are you trying to compare on-line prices with those sellers who don t have premises to pay for, public liability Insurance, staff, vehicles and most importantly, what about their after sales service, this all has to be taken into account.

If I have a client who has been shopping online and ask to price match, the answer is simple, go buy it online, but DON'T come back when it falls apart and ask me to repair it !!

I have seen it so many times, people buying elsewhere and then they are back wishing they had taken us up on our service in the first place.

I am sure if you bought this item elsewhere , your mate will still be a mate, and he wont be offended.

It would depend how much money we're talking about tbh. I had a quote of 2 friends for doing a job. Both were well over twice what I ended up paying for the job to be done. Always shop around

Yes you're doing it the wrong way "

90% of something is better than 100% of nothing, silly sausage.

His business actually does very well, but there's some good points here about the overheads of a real shop compared to an online business - and the aftercare. So it's not unreasonable that he's charged more.

I do have a vague idea of his profit margin, so I'm fairly sure he'd be more than breaking even if he matched, even factoring in labour/time.

Regardless, what it came down to was my faffing about. I'd left it so late to haggle that it would've been a classic dick-move to do it now. Being a gentleman (I'm growing a handlebar moustache and that makes me a gentleman), I can't be fucking people about at the last minute.

So: going to buy it full price from him, without a fuss, and then take some other very good advice on the thread about steering clear of doing business with friends in future.

Lesson learned.
