My thought exactly.....saves coal on their 30odd year old one and only aircraft carrier on its first ever "mission". The channel is one of the busiest shipping routes in the world.....everyone uses it.

Where and what has the British naval fleet been sailing and doing around other channels?

Just because its Russia crossing our channels we are jittery.

Bet as we have Brexit we will be doing a lot of escorts in the future. We have to standby to escort them back to Russia again soon after Syria operation.

As an ex matelot I'm more concerned about the Chinese Navy having it's first sortie into the Med since the 15th century. The Russian Navy is pretty much obsolete. They sailed through the Channel cos the Atlantic is a bit Harry Roughers and they might take some big goffers inboard.

Lol (there's yer "lol", OP) - the British navy is deployed, stretched and substantially in dock being fixed. There's not an awful lot left atm.

Hence being able to scramble a frigate and an I-destroyer...

Leave them alone. "We" can't do anything else.

I am not sure they are taking the shortest route. From the North Cape to Gibraltar the shortest route seems to be between the Shetland Islands and the Faeroes, then west of Scotland and Ireland. Of course that would be out in the deep blue oggin, but I do think it may be a bit of a dick measuring contest, possibly a little diversion in response to Boris's comments in Parliament.

That said their carrier did seem to be producing a lot of black smoke which might mean all is not well in the engine room.

We were just monitoring them due to the issues between us and Russia. Security reasons really. They actually laughed at our 'row boat's, even though their 'flagship' was built in 85.

Pretty sure we would have wiped them out if they attacked us..

Anyway, they were heading off to Syria to flex their muscles as they are trying to show the world that we should fear them. I actually laughed when I read that.

We sent HMS Duncan.. Type 45 destroyer (6 years old) which is the most advanced destroyer in operation.. It was accompanied with a Frigate which can't remember what it was..

However, with is being brits, that class (electric propulsion system) failed in the warmer seas and had to be towed back to be fixed. Some design expert decided it was a good idea to build something that would only work in the north Sea or Atlantic ocean.. Lol

Worst thing is, that new stealth warship that US have just launched uses the same electric propulsion system designed the same guy...

Presuming this is part of the northern fleet and they've sailed through the Barents sea and the Norwegian sea come down the north sea and through the straights of Dover, they've passed by a load of countries, I didn't see them making a big fuss, who knows where there going, after the break more speculation hey!.

I watched the fleet pass from the white cliffs (I was walking the dog!) and a couple of things struck me.

Firstly, the press reports of it being a knackered boat looked pretty accurate to me. I wasn't sure if the thing was under steam or they were electing a new pope with the amount of smoke pouring from it!

And it was moving so slowly the cross channel ferries were having to dodge round it. One of the watchers (the cliffs were packed) said it was to save fuel. Personally to me it was to give everyone a good look and to send a message of power. It was just posturing and to be honest the thing looked so old and decrepit it failed.

It was built in 85. No such thing as reliability back in them days.. Especially if it was built in Russia..

If they want to show their strength, modernise the fleet.. Bit like what we're doing..

The vtol aircraft that we have (dambuster squadron) is awesome piece of kit.. They will run off the Elizabeth class carrier when they are built n in operation (which in itself is a brute)

If Russia wanted to attack you wouldn't know about it until it was to late.

The TU-95 has been modified to carry a new air to surface nuclear bomb that is capable of being fired from 1200 miles away.

By the time the UK scrambled any aircraft the TU-95 would have fired and be heading for home.

Don't worry about the things you can see. Worry about the things you can not see but know exist.

The west coast of Scotland is the location of our own huge nuclear submarine base!

Not sure what with, Daring class is the world's best air defence ship but is very limited in what else it can do. Duke class much better all rounder but even so, only one of each. True, their carrier's aircraft would be mini-subs the moment they lifted off but those Russian anti-ship missiles are no joke. Still, we'd find out whether our kit worked!

Very not awesome! Even if they perform as advertised they have short range and low weapons load. And they are not working as well as they should. Very worrying indeed given the investment in money into the programme and ships, the QE class, that won't fly anything else fixed wing as no catapults.

Air: our Typhoons more than a match for anything they've got. But zero maritime patrol aircraft when most of our trade comes by sea.

Sea: we've got some really good stuff. Astute subs are cracking for example.

Land: our Apaches are the dog's bollocks and Challengers best there are.

Space: we have a big space programme but it's not really military.

Over all the biggest issue is quantity, we don't have enough of anything really.

"Perhaps many will correct me on this, but is not escorting a foreign warship in or near our territorial waters a form of etiquette? To prevent any misunderstandings?"

Yes you right and it is not just etiquette but also enshrined in the member states regulations to do so to all members crossing their respective channels.

Was it really a threat anyway it has a tug boat with it because it keeps breaking down and the ships we have are far more technically advanced. This was scaremongering at its best from the press this sort of thing happens frequently so its nothing new just another bullshit way to sell papers.

..Just to throw a spanner in the works, this could be a tactical masterstroke played by Putin.

Whilst everyone's attention is focused on some old aircraft carrier chugging down the channel he is sneakily lining up his brand new mahuusive fleet of mobile nuclear floating battle stations all down our east coastline?

We all turn around from our little chuckle over the white cliffs of Dover and it's FREEEZE MOTHER FUUUCKER!!!! (in a Russian accent obviously)

I think in warfare terms it's called selling a dummy...

... just saying

"As an ex matelot I'm more concerned about the Chinese Navy having it's first sortie into the Med since the 15th century. The Russian Navy is pretty much obsolete. They sailed through the Channel cos the Atlantic is a bit Harry Roughers and they might take some big goffers inboard.

"

The Admiral Kuzentsov is a POS, dogged by reliability and crewing issues.

The Russians are sending it to the Mediterranean to avoid conflict. If it launches air sorties from her then AC will not have to contend with Turkish SAM and interceptors should they come overland.

That being given our fleet has been reduced, we have no viable AC Carriers without falling in with the French, additionally our latest (and greatest) ships have been dogged with tech issues.

The Army is struggling to recruit to 82k and the RAF are.... well the RAF.

"The straights of Gibraltar is also a main international shipping lane.....not exactly tight! Far bigger ships pass through every day.

They are going from A to B by the shortest route....it's what people do.

No news here.....move along please!"

What struck me most was how much filthy black smoke they managed to put out. -If my vehicle was making black smoke it'd be banned from the highway. Perhaps the international community should have a word with the Russian Navy about that.

Environmental Protection Law limits black smoke by Marine Vessels - Call out the local EHT and let's see them ticket the Admiral Kuzentsov

"Russian warships sailed through the English channel today!

What does everyone think? Lol."

Does not bother us in the slightest, if they were up to anything they would be far more cover and it would hit us before the newspapers and TV could think about reporting it

Hey what's the betting that while we were using up our entire available resources to follow three Russian ships through an international sea lane, the rest of the fleet slipped out and went the Atlantic way round, underwater perhaps...
