"I liked the little bald bloke who's head kept getting slapped."

Jackie Wright, Irish comedian. He was only 4 feet 11 inches tall and a massive chain smoker - the slapping came original from them wafting the smoke off him as he went on scene.

I'm not going to be able to follow the popular view of this subject here, as some of the people that have been painted as utter white, I have fond memories of.

As I've mentioned before, but not gone into, my childhood was FUBAR, and my escape was comedy and music, I'm not going to go into who I hated, last time it descended into an argument and a weekend of finding something else to do

Cannon and ball, saw them on an end of the pier show, and they had a few kids come up on stage, I was one of them, they did a gag where they would call one of the kids back as we all left the stage and give them one more toy/game, that day it was me, I couldn't see over the pile of gifts (connect 4, and the like, non of your cheap shit) the audience was in bits as I struggled to get down the steps of the stage, omne of the best days of my life.

I used to be able to sit and not think about my situation while comedy was on TV, I'd watch all of the comedians of the time, jimmy tarbuck, the two Ronnie's, morcombe and wise, Phil cool, Jasper carrot, billy Connelly, little and large, jimmy cricket, too many to list.

You can have your opinion of the comics of Hester year, but when they are the light relief from a sad world, that means something to me

Oh, is this the 'dragged up in the 70s' thread? Can I join in ....

Benny Hill - my parents liked him but urrgghh, even as a kid I found him exceptionally creepy.

Dad's Army is timeless, and we'll still watch repeats now but so much 70s 'comedy' was cringeworthy - horribly sexist and racist. I know the outside world was pretty sexist and racist too so it was a product of its time but if you watch (many) 70s sitcoms now they really emphasise how disgusting attitudes were. Take 'On the Buses' where the two main characters were presented as lotharios who had no trouble 'pulling' 'dolly birds' (70s speak) despite the fact they were greasy, snaggle toothed, ugly old blokes at least 20 or 30 years older than the women who swooned in their wake! I don't think I fully appreciated the sexism at the time it was originally shown but even back then I knew it was 'wrong' on some level. And 'Mind Your Language' was not only puerile but so offensive with its ridiculous and unfunny racist stereotypes.

Off the top of my head, and apart from Dad's Army, the only 70s stuff I'd watch again now for pleasure, as opposed to 'OMG can't believe they just said that' would be Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em and Fawlty Towers.

And now I feel really old ....
