New passport arrived by normal post doesn't seem right

I renewed my passport a few weeks ago, & was surprised to come home & find it amongst the regular post. It was in an envelope clearly marked Home Office, & can't believe in the fraudulent world we live in it didn't require a signature.

What surprised me even more was that my old one arrived today & came via courier which required a signature. TBH I hadn't even expected my old one to be returned, why would I need it back & with it's corner cut it was of no use to anyone. It doesn't bear thinking about if my new one had got into the wrong hands. I recently got a new credit card, admittedly it didn't require a signature but it did come in a plain envelope!

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I think you have to tick a box to get the old one back.

The Royal Mail handles the passport so it should be secure. They'd soon lose the contract if all the passports disappeared.

After we got out visas extended our passports were sent back and required signatures. We weren't home and it was a fucking hassle. I'm the U.S. they just send it in the regular mail.

I have 2 British passports and a blue passport... you get sent your old passport back if you tick a box or have unexpired visas in it...

They send new passports back in normal post unless you request recorded delivery. The new passport is relatively tamper proof with regards to the photo etc. And they go through a special "thing" at the sorting office...

It's all good.

Happy Landings!!

When I worked in UKPS - all old passports were automatically returned to the customers - there was no process set up to dispose of them - perhaps that's changed these days.

I got both new and old passports back together in the same envelope, via 1st class post, 4 days after sending them off for renewal

At least having the old one back you are a bit safer knowing it hasn't got into the wrong hands, plus I like having the old ones of my kids, I like to see how they have changed but then I'm a weirdo, I keep everything and falls out/off and what they do... don't ask!
