Ouch!

Training last night and my son (who is a black belt) was fighting another black belt (think UFC but without the cage), anyway, the fight got quite brutal between the two, both giving as good as they got, unfortunately my son ended up with a cracked rib from a kick, you could literally hear it go on the impact.

Poor man is in quite some pain this morning.

Unfortunately there's not a lot you can do for your ribs

Keep up with the painkillers is about all....

I cracked two, when I had a bad fall in Jiu Jitsu, and it hurts like a bastard

That's one thing that it certainly does NOT teach.

The focus is on discipline and respect.

If you were commenting on something you knew the slightest thing about....then you would not be saying what you just said.

martial arts teach discipline, social skills and respect.

Football causes more injuries, would you consider that barbaric?

Always one

Barbaric? Have you any idea of the training and dedication that goes into any martial arts?

Sorry to hear about yer lad OP, a broken rib is very painful as I can testify after a game of rugby and a crunching tackle off a guy while I was at school back in the 70's

He got his comeuppance about a month later though when someone tackled him and broke his collarbone

.

Discipline, respect, physical awareness of your abilities are all things that you learn in a good martial arts class.

Be it karate, kung fu, judo, boxingboxing or even tai chi.

Off the grid

Hope he's ok.

(And I'm really not sure how a sports injury can be described as barbaric/teaching hatred? )

I couldn't agree more- I did karate throughout my youth and I couldn't think of something better to get my son into

I've had a cracked rib, broken nose and both collar bones fractured during my 10 years of training, injuries happen, my son will be ok in time, and the guy that caused the injury, couldn't apologise enough afterwards.

I know the feeling, I've been into martial arts for over 20 years and had a couple of broken ribs in my time, he'll be feeling the effects for a good few weeks but he'll be fine, just don't let it put him off sparring in future!

Oh and I agree totally, martial arts teach discipline and respect, and if anything it teaches you not to fight unless it's in a controlled environment.

I think that everyone else has said everything. If you don't know about Martial Arts, please don't make assumptions. You could not be further from the truth.

Barbaric and teaching hatred?

I suppose you think i should take up flower arranging instead of doing boxing.

It may not be your sport of choice but for me it has given me my life back.

Through boxing i have lost nearly 7 stone, reversed my diabetes and am no longer disabled by back and joint pain. I have also successfully given up smoking. I can now work and am no longer a burden on the NHS or reliant on benefits.

Taking up boxing is one of the best things i have ever done. It hasn't made me aggressive or changed the kind of person i am, if anything it has made me a better person.
