Depends on the atmosphere I want.

Lighting is brilliant for setting a mood, so from pitch dark fumblings through to sunlight frolics and everything in between (candle light, dimmer lights etc etc) it's all good if I'm having fun.

And I like to consider the lighting part of setting the fun I want.

(control freak much? )

You could try those touch lamps, they usually have three settings and the lowest is a warm soft low light that gets gradually brighter each touch.
