Empty your piggy bank.... count all your loose change .... check down the back of the sofa,, buy the best one you can...... feel smug and embrace the peaks and troughs of ownership..

Worth every penny though... love'em...

Start by shot blasting the shell and then rebuilding it with all new panels, and check the end float as this is a good indication that the engine is goosed...

Ah stuff it start by fluttering your eye lashes at the bank manager, they are a true labour of love but so rewarding

Have a look at alternatives too...I used to have a Mazda Bongo which suited my needs better than a VW and was cheaper for the age of the van. They're great fun, I miss it!

"T5 or T6 for converting "

Think of a price but then add the "scene tax".

I've got a T5 but bought it well under market value. 3 years on and still get offered more for it than I paid!

.

T4s there pretty hard to find a decent one, if you do expect to pay more for a late t4 than an early t5 (the very first lot didn't have a very good start shall we say) .

Price is difficult late t4 say 2001 in fairly good nick with around 150-200,000 miles probably around 5k upwards to 7k for the caravelle , 3.5k to 5k for a van.

Early t5s will be a bit cheaper but they come with the modern problems of alot of electrics/electronics!.

.

I've always preferred the 2.5 TDI 5 cyl the 1.9ltr 4cyl gets more mpg but it doesn't quite have the grunt of the 2.5 when loaded. And the 2.5 non turbo are definitely a required taste.

.

Fitting one out as a camper is not easy, it's time consuming and needs some electrical and joinery skill if you want to keep costs down, rock and roll beds are very expensive and very few of the after market ones meet standards for passenger carry, the ones that do are about 800 quid, high top roofs aren't as hard to do as you think fibreglass tops are cheap but you'll never get in a car park?... The pop up ones are trickier but you get to park pretty much anywhere as the VW's just go under the 6'6" barriers.

.

Hope that helps, the VW's are terrific utility vehicles, but they the usual places to check like every vehicle.

Try the t4/t5 forums there very useful for tips

Advice I'll not be taking As I've done all the best hotels and resorts you can possibly name and worked all over the world staying in them...

It's about the desire to taku up where I left off in 86 on that wet cold Dover docks .. last I heard it she had £800 quid parking tickets on it before it was dragged off to compound

That's not what they said, it's got nothing to do with rarity.

It's an owner's club, most vw camper owners don't have a rare one or spend second mortgages on them, most of them spend they're spare time on them, it's a hobby where you get to give fellow hobbyists your secret wave and occasionally meet up with them for jibber jabber.

It's a clique and your not in it

Find a local owners club, they will know people who can do the work you can't do; taking body back to bare metal, respraying, engine work, re-upholstering, electrics etc.

They will also have a list of parts suppliers who are reputable and cheap.

Check out VW shows as auto-jumbles are a great way to find original bits.

Most importantly set a budget, then in 12 months rip it up

Southampton

I started of with thinking about a T1 or T2. Then worked out they have no crash protection, airbags, anti lock brakes heating, Air con etc.

Ended up getting a brand new one with 3 years warranty and renting it out for a few weeks during the summer.

The demand for rental is so great I am buying a second. You won't get rich but with a little work you can get £10,000.00 a year in rental from one.
