Cyclist v Motorist

who would you think would win, yeah I'd say the motorist too, so why do most cyclists still insist on crossing red lets, as a few of you know, I cycle as a means of getting to work and those who know Liverpool will know that getting from Speke to Bootle using the dock road is quite a gauntlet during the rush hour traffic even in a car.

Lost count this week on how many cyclists have run red lights and I'm just waiting for the time when one gets knocked off their bike, it will be a "serve ya bloody right" moment

Sorry, not been around, new job has restricted my time in the forums, looks like we have a load of new posters too

going back to your opening post (just to keep it relevant) I have no idea why cyclists run red lights,, crazy fools!

cyclists not too bad - but yeah cheeky bastards at red lights

scariest thing is feckin horses

up in jockland we have a lot of country roads - 60mph limits

lots of bends - blind bends etc

when most cars today can cruise easily at 60 even 50 round all these roads - when you meet a horse on those bends

ooooooooo my feckin god

get off the road!

i have pals that are horsey folk and appreciate - a to b etc they need the roads - and yes we have signs up saying oooo there might be a lunatic on a horse on the next bend

but really on roads with 60mph limits horses should have a wee horse path

a cyclist is quite slim and can be missed with reasonable ease - but a horse

fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck!

Know what you mean about the cyclists though....I had one clobber my passenger side wing mirror the other day whilst I was waiting for the lights to change

I didn't drive until I was thirty and still mainly use bikes to get about. Agree about the red light thing - also feel that if you can afford a bike, you can afford lights. Cyclists after dark without lights are invisible (I tend to be lit up like a Christmas tree). On the other side of things - I'm sure none of you drives ever break the 30mph speed limit in town. Also, maybe BMW could start to fit indicators to their cars soon.

very rare i see cyclist cross red lights as I am 1 of the many who dont

an use the high way code as the next. why dont drivers take care when there cyclist about rather to shake us of the road we have the right to be there. 1 driver almost knock me down if i didn't break hard, he did not look but he look for passing cars.

the driver got nick for careless driving

Not seen it but heard about it, I'm a patient person though and hope one day I'll witness it myself, I wear a head cam too so will have it to treasure for ever

Being one of both, I quite agree lol. If you're using the road, follow the fucking rules of the road ya tossers. Stop for lights and zebra crossings, give way at junctions, one way streets are one way for everyone (except pedestrians of course!) all that kinda stuff. What really pisses me off is when cyclists jump up onto the pavement to ride round a red light, only to jump back onto the road a little further on!

On the flip side, people really don't look out for them enough. I've nearly been taken out a few times by drivers that really weren't looking.

A bit of mutual respect should help...

Are we not taught to drive at an appropriate speed for the road, conditions, weather and your field of view? Meaning you drive at a such a speed where you can stop safely within your field of view. Yes, on a country road that is straight for miles 60 may be appropriate, but round corners where you can't see round the bend ahead?

Must admit it annoys me incredibly when a cyclist runs a red light, the last one that did got a 2 fingered salute as my son wouldnt let me shout a**hole out the window

what annoys me most when drivers speads off an almost nock me down when iam turning right with full hand use oy arm single

driver totally ignore it.

the police were again behind him so he was not looking an got pulled over.

The one you want to try is Cyclist vs Pedestrian. Cyclist comes bombing down pavement, which he shouldn't even be on, and takes out innocent little me, just trundling along on my way out of the library, laden with books. Did he apologise? Did he b******s.

So when I see cyclists jumping reds, on the pavement, and generally being arsebiscuits, I tend to get a bit grouchy. Oh, and having no lights at night. Especially when wearing dark clothing!

As a driver, I think I'm quite considerate of cyclists. I basically treat cyclists the same way I treat horses, and pass wide and slow.

Funnily enough though i am always hugely respectful to cyclists and motorcylists, yet ive had a cyclist pull out of a side road in front of me, and had to slam the breaks on hard otherwise i would have hit him and i was going the speed limit.

Ive had the same as you, had to shoot onto the pavement to avoid being knocked off my bike so i am glad they got him too, shame there was no police around

As another regular commuter/ leisure cyclist i agree completely!

I simply cannot understand the mentality behind the excuses trotted out by those cyclists who jump red lights, the "Oh it's to get away from the vehicles behind me" or "but i only do it if it's safe" responses.

Sit in the middle of the lane, in the traffic and ride through the junction like that. That way, no-one can pull a dangerous overtake and no-one can attempt to pull left on you at the junction.

Depends on the road of course but it's done 'cos it's often safer that way.

It might seem odd but look at it this way, on a narrow single carriageway road riding in single file can cause some motorists to attempt to pass when there really isn't enough room - like when traffic is coming the other way or at a bend for example.

Riding two up creates a profile that is more like a small car, therefore making the driver behind overtake properly with more space given as according to rule 163 of the Highway Code.

Also, riding in a group of 4 or 6, two up is safer because the group is tighter so that a motorist cannot attempt an overtake when there is not enough room, and then pulling back into the left where a string of cyclists are.

Its called defensive riding and done for safety. I know some drivers think it's done deliberately to annoy but in reality it is done to control the road space around you and to make drivers behave a little more sensibly around cyclists - which most do of course.
