I was just listening to the first of four BBC Reith lectures about identity. This one was looking at religion and the other three will look at race, nationality and culture. We all have multiple identities from the 4 already mentioned to sexual, hobbies, sporting, professional, educational, class, marital etc.

What 3 identities do you think are most important to you?

For me I think its 1. marital, 2. professional 3. educational

As in how you see yourself, rather than how you see others.

I am many things, to many people.

I wonder if that makes me a patchwork blanket? Lots of different bits, but all important, and contributing to the whole?

I don't feel it myself, but it seems I am a source of calm and comfort to those who are close to me. Odd when I am by nature an introvert.

I think it's dangerous to define ourselves by outside factors, I defined myself as a husband, father and provider. Then I lost my job, my marriage ended and I don't have my children. How do I then define myself?
