Goldfish don't grow to the size of their environment, that is a myth. What happens is they will become stunted and deformed. A standard goldfish should grow to be around 1ft long given the correct living environment, feeding etc. They can also live into their 40's.

Captive fish release a hormone in their urine (yes fish do wee, kind of) and when this hormone reaches a certain level in the water, growth inhibitors are activated and they don't increase in size. That is why many fish in well-filtrated aquariums with regular water changes will 'out-grow' the size of the tank.

Goldfish are members of the carp family and can indeed live for 40 years and beyond!

Yeah they get bigger - we put some into our pond 4 years ago and they are almost as big as our biggest Koi and he is about 15inches long

Beeston

I had a mate at school who accidentally put his fish in a bowl with a tiny residue of bleach in it when he cleaned its tank one day.

The poor fish's fins and tail disintegrated and it spent several weeks bobbing around on the tank bottom furiously thrashing its tail stump to move around in erratic and random directions.

The fins and tail gradually regrew and it was fine for many years afterwards.
