No, but not teaching them healthy eating habits while they're young is surely part of being a responsible parent?

"It's cruel that's all I'm saying. "

I feel sorry for them. We all got teased about something in school, no-one was immune. I think it builds a lil character learning to stand up for yourself. But fat kids came in for way more than the rest of us. And I'm sure it's even worse now than when I was at school. With internet trolling, and the trend to have unrealistic body ideals. And unfortunately, fat kids often grow into fat adults. And aside from the health issues, the damaged self-esteem is terrible. I wish parents would take greater responsibility.

"Are kids only fat because their parents force feed them?"

I feel cruel even writing about it but my daughter was in a new group for swimming this morning cos she's gone up a stage, the kids looked like they ranged from 7-8 and there was one girl who was huge, huge belly, cankles, kept crashing into my kid as well, could see how self conscious she was when she got out the pool to walk down to the deep end, she wouldn't jump in like the other kids had to like lower herself in. Then I had the mother next to me watching, she was huge as well eating what looked like a peters sausage roll or pasty, packet of steak McCoys (my favourite crisps!) ate 2 mini milky ways and drinking out of a litre bottle of lucozade, at 9 in the morning. Class is only 30 minutes you don't have to eat like that, especially today when you assume everyone has a roast dinner for lunch. It's just cruel I think, kids ain't born massive and by feeding them shit it's setting them up for a world of cruelty from other kids.

I had video games/consoles when I was a kid and spent a lot of time playing on them but like you I also spent a lot of time out playing football with friends, it's about getting the balance right.

It's a difficult one. I generally agree it's on the parents, but by the age of 11 I was saving my pocket money and hoarding food so I could binge on it in secret - that had nothing to do with my parents and what they fed me. I was never really overweight till I was an adult but I could easily have been if I hadn't grown so fast, and it wouldn't have been their fault.

For me modern technology is to blame, when I was a kid we didn't have mobile phones or the internet we used to go out and play footie or tracking in the park. Computer games were the commodore64 which took half hour to load then crashed. Technology is good but it has a lot of questions to answer for.

This kid was in a swimming lesson so the parent is good for letting her child learn a life saving skill but based on what the mother looked like and what she was eating, it's just a case of feeding her child the same old crap that she eats. She couldn't have been older than 8 either.

In the middle

I do love a bit of generalisation

Explain this to me then, I have two sons who both ate home cooked meals, who only had take away meals for special occasions etc, the youngest is 6'2" and eats like a horse yet slim and the eldest hardly eats yes he is much "beefier" than the youngest. It's all about your body and how it reacts to what you put in it, unfortunately these days most parents don't cook and kids think diner comes out the microwave or a man delivers it to the door, there are lots of reasons people are/will be large

Ok - putting my head on the line here.

I work in nutrition and dieting, there is a definite trend in over weight children to overweight adults.

It is indeed to do with lifestyle (unless of course there are underlying medical issues)

Most clients I see that have weight issues, have parents in the same situation.

Also having studied sociology, our lifestyles have changed very much from our predecessors.

Nowadays it is more common that both parents work due to the high cost of living, so therefore, healthy balanced nutritional meals are hard to do - gone are the days where a mother stays at home and cooks a healthy meal at night.

We, as a generation depend on fast and convenient, and quite frankly anything that is that is full of shit.

Also, technology has driven the younger generation to not feel the need to move, have to walk to friends houses and get out as they have everything that they need in the comfort of their rooms.

I am a mother of 4 and I work, yes I struggle at times to provide my children with home cooked meals but I do my damn best to ensure I make as many as possible and they are as physically active as family time constraints allow x

I will also point out that as an adult, it's not sensible to point out obesity to children, it can very much flip and have very negative consequences long term.

It's about educating the parents, but the parents want to have to ask for and accept the advice.

It's learned behaviour.

So in some cases it's not that they are lazy & cruel the parents need help & reeducation about making good food choices.

I'm sure the mum has enough shit from the health authority over her kids weight seeing as our kids are weighed in School and monitored without everyone else having a go.

Perhaps she and her kid were at the pool to get some exercise and get healthy and this was their first tentative step.

Being a parent is hard enough as it is. But unless folk know someone's personal circumstances they need to stop judging from the outside looking in.

I'm fat, does this mean if I take my (slim) kids to a pool I'm going to have someone looking at me being all judgey?

Sheesh. Live and let live.

I agree with this very much, children shouldn't be made to "diet" as they still have a fair bit of growing to do, steering them in the right direction is much better than giving them a food complex which leads to years of yoyo dieting and food anxiety

They needn't be.

We have always cooked proper meals for ours, heck I even cooked proper meals when I lived alone and didn't finish work until gone 9pm. A slow-cooker, or a pressure-cooker means decent food is only ever ½ an hour away. (quicker than ordering take-out, and far cheaper too)

But it's the constant snacking culture that is more of a problem imo

Off the grid

I know a kid who regularly steals food to eat. He also has a disability which means his muscles haven't formed very well and exercise is painful for him.

My kids look really healthy and slim (solid muscle tbh) but their diets are extremely limited because of sensory problems. One of them ate a tiny bit of apple over the summer after an intense week of me making nutrition really fun and exciting (vitamins giving you different superpowers etc). Their sibling wouldn't even touch it.

It's really not as simple as "just give them healthy food" for every kid.

If we could work on anything I'd rather society was less judgmental, and then maybe the larger kids wouldn't get bullied?

"Are kids only fat because their parents force feed them?"

Not force fed them but they do have control over what their child eats. There's no excuses for child obesity. The health implications are awful and no child should go through that. It's just not healthy!

I would happily agree with my children's school teachers to stand outside the chip shop (that's situated across the road from the school gates), and prevent school kids from going in. Or chip shops etc ought to be banned from selling their food to school kids during school hours.

I was picked on at school for being the fat kid, which looking back at photos I wasn't anywhere near as big as many kids I see now. It made me determined that my kids wouldn't have to go through that so they do as many physical hobbies as I can afford to do with them.

I can't understand those who got bullied but have let their kids end up in exactly the same situation they were in 20 years earlier

This is also a factor, my eldest two are autistic so textures and mixing food can sometimes be a battle field. However I think we tend to adapt around these things the more we grow with them.

I agree that society should be a little more forgiving, I myself am a comfort eater so regardless of my job will always struggle with my weight.

I think that we just need to be a little more thoughtful of things.

As someone above said - it's also to do with the snacking between meals.

When my little one (7) nags she's hungry (all the time) I always make sure she has plenty to drink first, a lot of the time our bodies can confuse hunger with thirst x

See again that's another fine line.

My son was a problem eater from the age of 5/6. Whilst I don't condone giving kids fizzy drinks all my son would eat on a daily basis until he finished year 6 was ~ a chocolate crepe, 2 x breadsticks / crisps & an orange juice. The token grapes / apple came back untouched.

I had to speak to the school in the end & ask the LC's to leave him alone over his packed lunch, was a difficult time.

Btw he's now a 5'11 athletic beanpole of a young man.

What's the answer in people's opinion?

Is there enough information available about how to prepare quick, simple nutritious meals? Is advertising to blame? Can anyone really claim to not understand the basic principles of eating less and moving more?

"Agree with this. This thread is so unfortunate and shows how ignorance outweighs sensibility. So sad

How is it ignorant to think that extremely obese children are often products of poor parenting?

More often than not it is. You should see some of the stuff I see in packed lunches. When did it become ok to fill a bag with processed crap, chocolate bars and crisps for childs lunch. It costs far more and is lazy.

Some things should be treats.

Exactly.....treats are treats, our school take the bad food and give the child a school packed lunch if theirs Is full of crap..

If you saw what I do you would be shocked. A school lunch costs £2.50 on average. A bag full of crap is more than that!

It's lazy and expensive.

"

I've repeated myself...sorry.

But it really gets to me, not that you could tell

The addictives and preservatives in food like these have an impact too, regardless of what people may say.

"It's a difficult one.

This is exactly what I did. Once you get to that age, they can't control what you eat!

But they can control their child receiving enough exercise. Restrict their time on games consols, take them out walking or playing football etc. Don't give them pocket money. Buy them little gifts that you know they would enjoy. All different kind of ways. "

Basing this purely on my personal experience of me, as a child - that's over simplistic bollocks. I have wonderful parents who did a great job bringing me up and encouraging me to be healthy. I didn't have games consoles, I'm too old. I played out. I did sport. But I was still fucked up about food for reasons which are not their fault. Would you blame the parents of an anorexic for their child's eating disorder?

"Are kids only fat because their parents force feed them?

I am sorry for laughing at this (before anyone kicks off, I am not laughing at the obese child or mother) I laughed at how detailed the menu was...how did you get time to watch your child swimming...had visions of you staring mouth agape in shock...lol"

I recognise the green packaging on peters products, plus we're up high overlooking the pool and the mother was to my left, fucking bumping of b.o as well.

Our son existed on chocolate spread sandwiches and the odd apple for years, he would sometimes eat chips and beans. I used to pay for school dinners fondly imagining that he was at least getting o e meal a day until he told me he liked one dinner lady because she let him leave them. We tried starving him in to eating but on seeing his skeletal chest one day I just decided to give him what he would eat.

1 of my kid's is vegan and 1 vegetarian and they get flack for "being awkward" my other son would eat junk all day if he could but plays sports 7 day's a week and is a bottomless pit! We are all different in our make up but general rule is if you don't look after yourself it will show in some shape or form. My kid's changing their diet's as a Heath related choice changed the whole families way of eating... putting my hand up...my kid's showed me a healthier path. Don't get me wrong I had the balance pretty ok, not excellent but ok as I caved to lazy days of convenience cooking but they put me back on track to a healthier more convenient lifestyle. We had homemade Italian soup that I defrosted yesterday. I cook in bulk for my lazy day options now

There's plenty of information.

You can't avoid it unless you're a hermit

What a lot of it comes down to is caring about your family's health and well being (massive overgeneralisations in place)

Exactly the same here. In senior school I was thinking healthy choices but no,he kept the money & bought sausage rolls &chocolate from the Tesco Metro.

I found by backing off he eventually made slightly better choices. For example he will now eat and apple / raw peppers.

But let me guess, as a parent I bet you were judged really harshly for what your son ate.

And your son was judged too. I have food issues and I was constantly criticised and mocked where I used to work because of what I ate. Housemates used to judge me when I was a student.

It's not remotely helpful. It didn't make me change what I ate. If anything it made me eat worse foods and avoid eating in public- it was just incredibly stressful for me.

Who has the right to judge what others eat? Really? Do we get to judge you now on personal stuff that has nothing to do with us?

I swear people get judged more for unusual food habits than they do for smoking. So I don't think it's about health. And I don't see slim people who don't exercise shamed for that ever. People with more visible difficulties are just an easy target.

4 kids here.. all eat the same food... one is seriously overweight due to disability.... its not always down to parenting..

My daughter is about 7 stone over weight and despite all best efforts that seems as small as I can get her down too.

However she put it on mostly due to school giving her extra portions daily... plus double puddings. I had to actually ask them not to x

Did all you judgey mothers breastfeed? Are you as judgemental over a bottle of formula as you are over a sausage roll?

Hopefully they'll be better equipped to deal with life's shitty stuff and nasty people and not turn to overeating or worse.

I've got three kids their all fussy eaters but mainly eat the same things, both my boys are stick insects and my little girl who is only seven would make two of my boys. But it breaks my heart when she comes in from school and some low life calls her fat and ugly, I then need to sit with her to make sure she eats cause she thinks that if she stops eating she'll be thin and wont look ugly anymore.

As mothers to a certain degree, we are damned if we do and damned if we don't! Three of mine were tube fed my breast milk as they were in the SCU and I bottle fed them after that. When I look back at how much has changed from having my first to now...we are all continually learning and evolving. What work's for one may not work for the next.

I grew up in tough times but my mother always put a good dinner on the table and insisted we eat together, she instilled that in me and I have carried it on. It is as much about the time as the nutrition I think.

I'm fat my daughters are not.

Everything was cooked from scratch and they were not allowed processed food or junk.

My issues around food is psychological, I didn't bring my that to my daughters. Mum was fat, dad was slim, they were happy...three, happy, contented, slim girls.

That is disgusting.

The mother stuffing her face at that time of morning... not your description.

My brother had diabetes before he turned 28. I wish these things were talked about more.

ive not read the whole thread but this is something that really really gets to me

Im paranoid and depressed for various reasons, i suffer anxiety at times and other peoples opinions matter and i am constantly thinking i myself am being judged because i am a VERY large lady (size 26)

I wont eat in public because i am ashamed of my size and its a horrible feeling. Ive pretty much been trying to shift weight my entire adult life.

I am a very proud parent to a 6 year old and am in fear if she were to become over weight. I hand on heart believe we eat healthily and in moderation with everything. She is active, plays football, goes to swimming and dance lessons.

Its my worst fear if she were to become over weight and suffer in the way i have.

Potential judgement from others cripples me..

I've lost family members to obesity. My mother has diabetes and lost her leg two years ago because of it. I'm not offended by the thread. I wish we would talk more about it as a society. Perhaps worded better than some of the posts here, but still.

My daugthers are 14/13 respectively and I've noticed since I left the family last year both my girls have put on wieght. Atm I'm not too worried as both are vegetarian and also going thro pubity.

I feed they as well as I can and mostly fresh homemade foods.

I'm over wieght but I have drastically changed my diet and portion sizes now I live on my own. I'm not losing wieght tho and my doc has put this down to my fibro.

I do think it's sad when children are over wieght. I was slim as a child and put on my wieght with my second pregnancy.

It's down to us as parents to ensure that our children are both happy and healthy. Xxx

Computer games were the commodore64 which took half hour to load then crashed. Technology is good but it has a lot of questions to answer for."

Its all down to choice of food and eating habits.

Ive got stringbean genes, im hyper as fuck and my weight varied between 61-74kg's from the age of sixteen lol.. and im 6'4..

I see kids in prams eating fried chicken, i see multipacks of snickers for a quid, sugar everywhere...

My last Gf loved bbq sauce, maggie cubes and cooking would be chips or fucking toast...

When i was 3, we had a boiled egg, piece of rye bread and like tea or something in kindergarden.. lol didnt get any sweeties in such abundance especialy..

"What's the answer in people's opinion?

Is there enough information available about how to prepare quick, simple nutritious meals? Is advertising to blame? Can anyone really claim to not understand the basic principles of eating less and moving more?

There's plenty of information.

You can't avoid it unless you're a hermit

What a lot of it comes down to is caring about your family's health and well being (massive overgeneralisations in place) "

Ok so why are people ignoring it? It's very easy and dare I say it ironically lazy thinking to suggest it's laziness.

The reason I and my family don't eat fast food is because none of us like the taste I'm pretty sure if we did we'd eat a lot more of it. I'm lucky my mum cooked, I learned just by being around when she did it. She also knew how to feed a big family decent food on a small budget therefore so do I but what if you don't have that knowledge?

"They are just pure lazy, you are what you eat."

This isn't true.

My son eats a balanced diet, walks 0.7 miles to school & 0.7 miles back, does school pe twice a week, private swimming lesson once a week, rugby twice a week, plus playtime at school, running round at cubs & with the dog.

He is still overweight due to a medical condition. I am fighting to keep his weight at current level as he grows taller. I have seen so many doctors, paediatricians & dietitians it is untrue.

His older brother is just about scraping a bmi of 18. Surely if it was bad diet they would both be overweight or underweight?

Since TH was diagnosed with cancer I have been even more conscious of what we eat.

Some of you need to think before you comment as your comments can be hurtful.

It can, but I have seen too many identical OPs go differing ways to think there is ever an inevitability about them.

And I still feel one's ability to filter out some remarks, or concentrate on others, sometimes says much about oneself.

It's a tricky one. I was podgy as a kid but didn't become actually properly fat until I was a teenager and started cooking for myself. A lot of it is lifestyle related as well; as a kid I was an avid reader and listener to music whilst my brother ate loads more than me but spent his whole childhood running around. He was then and still is the tall thin one. So identical nurture but very different natures.

"I'm sure the mum has enough shit from the health authority over her kids weight seeing as our kids are weighed in School and monitored without everyone else having a go.

Sheesh. Live and let live.

well said im fat and ive got four slim grown up kids who all ate well balanced food and who are very active

its hard enough growing up without the need to judge when you dont know there circumstances

i was very slim until thryoids problems in my mid 30s and though i'm fat i don't sit and eat juke

Yet that was the one bit where I thought we'd ALL be safe. Surely no-one would admit to being personally responsible for child cruelty, hence no need for any white-knighting: finally a subject where we could all agree.

Or apparently not.

I wonder if the time is ripe yet to post the link to the newsstory about the parents of the obese child arrested for child cruelty?...

Bit simplistic...

Billy Bunter and his ilk existed long before digital media were all the rage and having a TV in your bedroom doesn't necessarily make you a slob.

A day at school is now considerably more active than in my day - when we sat like battery hens at desks being bored shitless and choking on chalk dust. Schools have better sports facilities, local authorities provide numerous avenues for getting active and young people have never had a greater menu of activities to take part in.

The myth of the obese kid spending his or her life in front of the screen munching pizza is worthy of Donald Trump.

In my day we spent our time in our bedrooms wanking ourselves silly - and it never did me no harm!

Letting your kids become obese is child abuse and should be treated as such (just like undernourishment would be neglect).

But 'fat' isn't that clear. Our youngest was a very fat baby - rolls of it. Then he started walking and quickly got to a healthy shape. Last year we received a letter informing us he was fat and inviting him to a fat camp. In fact there isn't a pinch of fat on him. He plays rugby almost every day, goes to the gym, runs cross country and is built like a brick shithouse. I burned that letter and have never mentioned it.

So I'm all for challenging parents that allow their kids to get fat but how it's done needs caution (and better assessment than a BMI table).

Ahh. Well. I was a fat kid. I'm a fat adult. I had very healthy diet as a kid and ran about in the woods until homework started to take over. No sweets, no crisps. Still I started dieting at the age of 12 and I was pretty much on a constant diet from then on but 20 years of beating myself up about my weight got to much and I gave up trying to lose weight

I used to eat healthy as an adult too but now I'm unemployed it's eat what I can afford. Don't understand this idea that junk food is more expensive. I simply can't afford to eat healthy now.

Don't have kids but I'm the only fat person in my immediate family.

Explain this to me then, I have two sons who both ate home cooked meals, who only had take away meals for special occasions etc, the youngest is 6'2" and eats like a horse yet slim and the eldest hardly eats yes he is much "beefier" than the youngest. It's all about your body and how it reacts to what you put in it, unfortunately these days most parents don't cook and kids think diner comes out the microwave or a man delivers it to the door, there are lots of reasons people are/will be large"

"It's cruel that's all I'm saying. "

Your comment is nasty, who are you know why thier over weight?

My son is 5 and weighs 6st. He was born with a rear condition. That means he's requires drug that makes it hard for him to maintain a normal weight.

He is a special case study for kids with the same condition, so they can live past the age of 2!

Yes he's overwight and thats a problem in its self. However much rather have a FAT child, taking medication in order to live and his organ to grow along with having an amazing childhood with loving family. However judgmental adults should be learn to think before speak. Because your the reason he crys when adults point and make whispering comments when I take him out. Or the reason he thinks he's ugly, asking everyday do I look skinny yet

"Ahh.

Don't have kids but I'm the only fat person in my immediate family.

vegetables cost fuck all at the market - or frozen."

They cost fuck all in the supermarket too....especially if you buy once it's been reduced. I pack out my bolognaise sauce with grated veg such as carrots, courgettes and mushrooms so the kids don't even know they are there. Means it's cheaper as you don't have to use much meat. Homemade soup is another excellent way to use cheap veg and make it interesting and doesn't take ages or great cooking skills. Much cheaper than ready meals.

For those saying healthy eating is expensive.. You know Aldi is a thing, right? Fabulous 5 or whatever it's called. Veg for pocket change.

Avoid the aisles full of sugar. Stick to the outside of supermarkers. Eat fresh produce, drink water.

If you buy veg that is in season it works out cheaper.

I don't get how any one can say it's cheaper to eat junk?

Because

1. they're too lazy to figure out how to use fresh veg

2. they're too lazy to walk around picking them and carrying them back to the car

I would happily to be honest reading some of the comments. I agree in some cases parents over feeding children is neglect and should be treated in such a way, however she does not know the family not the history of the family either so why is there a need to call the mother out.

As for the further comment of the mother smelling its pathetic and childish and in no way anything to do with the child being obese it's a nasty dig at another human.

So sorry if you don't agree with me but I don't like it when others feel the need to shame in such a way.

We're astonished every time we go somewhere and the toddlers in prams get a bag of something carby to munch on whenever they throw a tantrum. Why would you do that to your kids?

She ate enough food to sustain several rural African villages through winter in a half hour long swimming class. It's not exactly a thyroid issue?

But who the fuck sits and pays that much attention to what someone is eating, someone who has nothing to do with them, who they don't even know, so they can reel off a list at a later date to put them down on the internet? That is really rude and also fucking weird.

I'm not a parent so I can't judge!

But I'd like to think that if I was I would teach them healthy eating - along with all the other lessons that are a parents responsibility!

I'm fat and didn't come from a fat household.

I could blame genetics ... being half Caribbean doesn't help!

But then neither does the excessive amounts of food I put in my mouth!

Or the wine I guzzle!

I'm active and work on my feet and run around like a maniac most days - but nothing can defeat the evil sugar addiction!

Quitting smoking was easier!

I think it's the types of food that are available now.

Sugar and chemical laden rubbish that is all advertised as childrens food

I think anyone with half a brain knows how to eat / shop for healthy foods - it's applying the information, having the willpower and the time to stay away from the addictive sugar laden "convenience" crap - and not having it in the house for your children to eat.

Setting a good example.

Sorry for the ramble

The sugar thing is a real problem. Especially all the stuff hidden in pasta sauces and 'healthy' fruit drinks etc.

Completely detracting from the point.

Kids like that should get help at school and there should be nutrition guidance given to the parent

Unfortunately a lot of the time it's just laziness by the parents and access to cheap unhealthy foods

There are exceptions but in most cases that's the problem

Hope the wee lassy sticks with the swimming and once fending for herself grows up well and healthy

No, I think it's entirely relevant. What on earth is the motivation behind being so fucking judgemental of what another person is doing that you commit the list of what they're eating to memory and list it back to us so we can all gawp and snigger at the horrible fat person.

I wrote my comment based purely on observation, the child was in a group of 8 children and she was the biggest there, the teacher had to let her swim her widths alone when they normally do two sets of 4 kids together, she was disrupting the class as my kid and the other 6 kids were by the edge of the pool longer cos he had to wait for her to finish doing her thing as she was bumping into the other kids that were dwarfed by her and would have been hurt should they receive a kick in the head off one of her kicks, that happens in the class now and again when a kid is kicking their legs they'll accidently catch one of the other kids. So yeah when it affects something that I'm paying money for then I'm going to take notice. As for the mother, she was huge and she was humming of b.o, it's very hot in the pool stands and she was downing a litre bottle of lucozade and eating a pasty and chocolate and crisps at 9am. My comments were based on observation.

But unless the person is on here and reading this, how can it be shaming?

Surely it's just another "a funny thing happened to me today, I saw a right twonk do [insert something stupid] thread?"

I know I sometimes lack societal graces, but I just don't get it.

Saying the OP and others shouldn't be allowed to 'breed' because you feel offended on behalf of someone you'll never know on the other hand does seem a little weird to me.
