Off the grid

We're trying to change the taps on a small basin. We bought a basin wrench but it was too big and we couldn't find a smaller one. There was an adjustable thingy but the space up underneath the tap is so small it wouldn't fit round it?

What tool do we need?

When changing a basin tap I undo the conex nut on the pipe then twist the tap while holding the retaining nut under the basin. To fit a new tap do in reverse but put some plumbers mate (putty) around the Base of the new tap. If you would rather use the wrench one side is 3/4" and the other is 1/2".

3/4" for bath taps

1/2" for basin taps

Everything you need to know is available on Youtube......and there are some plumbers on here, im sure would lick your fanny whilst they are under the sink........ thus proving men can multitask.

It's just an awkward job when you can't get unfder their. Turning the tap is sound advice above. and a good grip. Towels behind to protect your wall or tiles. And a wrench.

We're both plumbers and sometimes on events do dozens of these in a day. We find that you require very small hands with a grip like iron, wrists which helpfully dislocate painlessly but still function....and a large swear box.

Off the grid

Husband says it's too tight a fit!

The problem is there is so little space underneath around the tap that any tool we've tried doesn't fit.

Gonna have a look and see what's available on Screwfix.

Wish us luck.

(Why does this all sound like a euphemism? Promise it's not.)

Maybe take the basin off the wall? Fit the tap then reinstall it?

Well to change the starter motor on a Vivaro van you have to

to the wheel off

remove the inner wing

remove the exhaust and cat

And that's just to see the starter motor

Sometimes what seem like the stupidest things to do are sometimes the simplest

Point taken..........but its a fucking Tap!!!! ......there are tap spanners and its a 5 minute job....baths are harder to do though.....you just need the right tools.

"Oooooo that's an idea. I'll see if that works."

Turn off hot and cold supply by isolation valve under your basin...disconnect the hot and cold pipework also your waste.....undo both nuts holding the basin back to the wall and just pull away from the wall!

You might have it siliconed in and will have to slice some of the silicone away for it to become loose

Yes and to take the basin off is a bit of silicone and 2 screws. If the basin is solid enough you could always remove the pedestal. Changed a set of taps this morning. 20 mins £60. The joys of being a plumber

This is not the way.....it might have a pedastal and screwed to the floor also ...this is overkill!!!!

I am an actual plumber ...

Theres hundreds of tools to do that job ... the best is what is called a lambda sensor socket but they are a mechanics tool.

I think like most have mentioned here your best bet is with a box spanner or a tap spanner cheap and easy to get hold of but unfortunately the job is and always will be a bit of a barsteward when the basin is still on the wall .

Pm me if you neeed help

No you dont ..... I thought this not long ago but if you remove the lower rad mount bar with the 4 bolts eitherside the rad will move enough to get your arm up and unbolt it ...

I've just done it

Badly corroded taps can be removed with a hammer.

Tap all round it until the tap is free of the sink. Place tap in trugg with all the others for the Christmas scrap cash in.

Fit new sink and taps.

Seems sensible to me, if it's not easy to do in situ ... Make it more accessible.

Posted 4hrs ago. It should be done by now. My tools packed up. And if I've been flirting enough, we should now be in your bedroom

It's a very simple procedure, all you need to do is lightly lubricate the shaft of the tap, then you'll need to get a flange sprocket and attach it to the foofoo valve.

Loosen foofoo valve with flange sprocket whilst pulling on the shaft, It helps if you pout at this point.

Now get a fanny clip and attach it to the foofoo valve, release flange sprocket and bingo the things off!!

Don't thank me
