Im a bit of a freak, if it says it goes out of date on a certain day i wont dare eat it... the food is probably ok to eat but im really fussy on them

are you like me? or do you just smell to see if its alright to consume and eat regardless?

Sell by dates are the worst thing ever invented.

If you shop in shops instead of supermarkets they don't have sell by or use by dates on, so what do you do then?

Lol, not getting at you, but it does drive me mad

The Forest

If I buy meat from the butchers, I write the date on the bag and give it 5 days. If we haven't eaten it by then, the cats get it.

my uncle was a chef in the army and dates used to drive him crazy.. he hated throwing away perfectly decent food.

I read a very interesting piece on this subject just yesterday on Martin Lewis's money saving expert forum... Apparently there is a a big difference between a 'use by' date on food and a 'best before' date. The former suggests that if you eat it after that date it could be bad for you, but the latter is (paraphrasing!) essentially meaningless on many types of food.

I'm always sneaking stuff past my kids that they'd whinge about if they noticed, never did 'em any harm (so far!)

I went into a local butchers and he pulled some steaks out which were verging on the purple. A woman refused them saying they had 'gone off'. I immediately said I would have them, meat should not be bright red, that denotes it is freshly killed and not 'matured'

Best steaks have to mature. Can't remember the number of days required.

I think it's a minimum of 21, but I've had them up to 45 days and the taste and succulence of the meat is superb

I dont know how my mom and others like her survived before all this sell by and use by...?

Its there for the supermarkets , not us.

They know that some will scream and run a mile if food is deemed past these dates and so go and buy more.

We should use our common sense when dealing with food.

We all know when its gone off and should be thrown away and shouldnt need a little label telling us so.

You'll need to wait till it's gone off a bit. There's that old thread again.

That'll be me then. lol

With the post here you'd need to send it before you bought it. Eh!

Out of date does not mean it is unsuitable for human consumption, manufacturers and processors have to allow a few days' grace. I use it as a rough guideline and also trust my senses when opening the packet, looks , smell and consistency. And I have taken food back that clearly was off and STILL WITHIN THE USE BY!!!

Sell by and best before are totally different to use by. The clue's in the wording really

If people can afford to throw perfectly good food out, then good on them but a tiny amount of common sense would save a lot of money. Sadly common sense is lacking for many in this day of "nanny state".

Me? If it looks fine and smells fine, i'll eat it. I've even been known to rinse a piece of chicken i'm not sure about under the tap, sniff it again then cook it

If it tastes and smells ok, and does not move, then I would eat/cook/drink it.

and if it tastes and smells ok and DOES move... I might consider shagging it, where in or out of date...;-)
