Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

The theme this year is psychological first aid and the support people can provide to those in distress.

The top ten tips from the Mental Health Foundation are:

1. Talk about your feelings

2. Exercise

3. Eat well

4. Drink sensibly

5. Keep in touch with loved ones

6. Ask for help

7. Take a break

8. Do something you’re good at

9. Accept who you are

10. Care for others

Wishing you all good mental health.

It's also worth just telling the people around you that you love them. Give someone you know a hug.

i have a son with problems and they don't always want you hassling them..........they just need someone to listen and not to give out to them.they know what they should do to help themselves but they have to be the ones to decide to get help......it's such a fine line line trying to help them but not to badger them and put them off discussing their problems with you x

he is 23.........he has about 3 good weeks and then a bad week.....the pattern seems to be quite regular.

now that he knows he has a problem and he knows that lots of people have it too it is easier for him.

he is not on medication and he tries to manage it by doing positive things x

Great post op

I still feel (and this is from personal experience) that as a whole the "system" still let's alot of people down unfortunately, even if you actively ask for help you can be left ignored to manage alone or lost in the crowd.

The more awareness is spread and the stigma of mental health is got rid of, I hope, the better the treatments, waiting times and perceptions from those who've never suffered or been involved with it in any form will be

Being 'in the green', whether it's your garden, a city park, the countryside etc has a really positive effect on your mental health. Even lying down on a patch of grass can lower your blood pressure. I like the woods best.

Realistically though, saying that 'going outside' is helpful for mental health issues is like saying that 'going outside' is helpful for someone with heart failure or a broken arm. It doesn't take into consideration the fact that many mental health issues are chemical imbalances in the brain that are not cured by doing things that make you feel good - the problem is still there. And you often don't feel good if you have serious problems.

It's true that it is difficult but see it as part of the treatment and it can help. When I am unwell I have to force myself to get out of bed and going for a walk feels like climbing Everest. Just as climbing Everest is one step at a time, so is the journey to good mental health.

If you didn't see it, it's worth watching 'The Doctor Who Gave Up Drugs' and the cold water swimming treatment.

I was merely adding to a list of possible ways in which people can, if possible, minimize the symptoms of mental illness alongside therapy and/or medication.

There are a few recent studies that show really positive results when people with mental ill-health spend time outside. Of course it's not a cure, especially for those of us who have a chemical imbalance, but it has been found to be a good coping strategy. Mind even runs Ecotherapy courses because the benefits of nature based activities are quite significant. As far as I'm aware there haven't been any studies on the effects of nature on broken arms and heart failure.

Here are the findings of one particular study:

Absolutely. I find it almost impossible to eat properly when I'm bad, and accepting 'who you are' when in the depths of depression and unable perceive anything with clarity is, again, almost impossible.

excellent thread

having my own black dog..affectionately named harry.. there are days when you don't want to get out of bed, be positive or do anything..along with medication, counselling, routine and exercise..mine was simply walking my real dog..as well as family & friends I came through the other end.

I have had two bad spells and now get odd day here and there..when I had my first encounter with harry I was mid way through my Open University degree..I can remember the questions I answered in an exam but not how I got there or back home

The one thing I made sure I did was be open with friends about having harry..some unexpected people were supportive beyond means and others that I expected to understand backed away...when my second encounter happened the former were there even more.

to anyone who has a harry..stay strong
