I am job hunting after many years in same position.

Just wondering why no companies seem to employ direct, every one seems to use recruitment agencies now days ?

You are so right! Be prepared to send your application form and not hear nothing back!

But don't give up! You will find the right job for you! I hate interviews!Good luck .

Cost... Sometimes easier to get someone else to filter out all the shite and simply present applicants than get your own hr team to do it. Time is another factor, same reasoning as above.

The single most frustrating thing I found after being made redundant. It took two agency placements before I got the job I wanted/deserved and 13 months in the process of not knowing whether you're working the next day or not, very stressful. I was lucky as there was no break in employment but I was constantly proving myself against strong competition from desperate overseas bods, lead me (him) to retrain as an engineer.

Agency use and zero contract hours are the new norm, it's a tough place out there at the moment, I'd suggest stay where you are or be prepared to fight through the agency way, it can and will be successful in the long run from personal experience, just remember it's the employer at roots level who now has the upper hand.

Just a couple of tips from me if you don't mind me posting:

Keep going - CV on as many sites as possible and don't lose heart.

If going through agency, keep updating your profile every week to keep it as near the top as you can.

Large companies have sometimes got their vacancies on their own websites.

Get googling.
