Pet names do nothing for me. Babe and hun in particular make me shudder.

Occasionally I'll refer to people as chick or lovely but I'd rather people didn't call me anything. DG is fine.

just depends who ur with, I call some of my fem friends slut, and thats the affectionate term. I do think some people, and of course its mainly women who get pet name annoyances, really should ease up a bit instead of sounding angry when they are called babe, darling, hun(Rangers girls hate that lol) etc...pretty easy enough just to ask not to be called it. Remember people have been saying "Babe" before it came out as a film lol

p.s women are allowed to call eachother babe n hun more than men I've noticed.....

Why should we ease up? Pretty much all the women on this thread so far have said they hate it. Does that not tell you something?

I have it on my profile not to address me as such and STILL they do it. So clearly, politely asking makes no difference.

And single men on here wonder why they struggle to get meets...

It depends on the context,in a patronising way then no but for me they're just friendly terms of endearment and don't bother me at all,I use some myself and yes I agree Eve there are far worse things you can be called but again in the right setting and context they're also a turn on

Not fat cunt of course!!

If people are trying to get into my knickers by thinking calling me babe/hun etc in a first mail, it wouldn't work as it is an instant turn off.

They only have to say " can I get into your knickers" instead and I will give them a straight answer

the good lands, the bad lands, the any where you may want me lands

Just my OP but I consider that informality; whether you like it or otherwie as wholly inapproprate untill you have built up a relationship and people are comfortable at allowing one another to be less formal and use terms of endearment

I had someone call me 'my dear' in a message today - and they were about 10 years younger than me! Grr!

I don't mind babe/ hun from people I know (usually tongue in cheek style) (note, 'don't mind' as opposed to something more positive such as 'quite like') However, I do find them irritating in messages from random strangers. It won't get them an instant 'no', but it does earn them a big black mark, especially if they're younger than me. I really, really don't like bitch/ whore/ slut or anything of that nature, though - instant total turn off, whatever the situation

For me they're better than babe/hun. For one thing, I'm not a babe. I'd never class myself as such and it just makes me cringe a bit.

As has been said, I don't really like pet names from anyone but especially not strangers... it's over familiar and unnecessary. From someone I know and if its specific it can actually make me warm slightly inside.

As a rule I don't call anyone babes.

Some women do call men babes. I've been called it and I don't mind if she's being friendly and it just her way of getting into my pants.

In answer to your question BG: I don't find it a turn off.

I do think some people need to chill-out a little around here though.

Some of the rants are more revealing than some of the profiles!

I've had two men in the past fortnight call me "young lady" and both of them were only a couple of years older than me! The context was entirely inappropriate - nothing to do with paying me a compliment but just coming over as really patronising. One of them started "now them young lady..."

Yuk.

I'll (martin) hold my hand up and admit I use "hun" quite a bit, especially in the chatrooms. Many of the replies I get contain it too. I call all the guys "dude", and many others say "m8".

With ladies I know well I use allsorts, especially when taking the piss lol (hunni, sweetie, sugar knckers etc) but not babe, just not my style.

Considering what we are on here for, a little informality isnt such a bad thing, surely?

As someone who frequents those awful Chatrooms on this site (an unforgivable sin of course) I think the use of 'hun' 'babe(s)' etc by people on first conversation is really quite patronising and is normally a cack handed attempt at a fast s**g.

Clearly when you know someone very well you will find your own 'terms of endearment' for each other but when its "Hi hun / babes / sexy fancy a PM?" its just crap basically. The users are normally of a high opinion of themselves and can't understand why a woman won't just part her legs immediatel...

Having said that I do have to be very carefulk because I am from the West Country where 'moi luvver' or 'my lovely' are pretty common and used between blokes as well as between different sexes. And this can be misconstrued. So its not used unless I know the person.

Babe, Love, Darlin', Honey, Poppet, Cherub, Chick, Angel, Sweetheart.

Can't see the big deal, after all they're only harmless terms of endearment.

I'm sure people get called a lot worse,no doubt I have been.

I sometimes think people are too reactionary over things of little consequence. T

"I tend to call a lot of my friends (and my family) babe, it's just a term of endearment to me and comes out of my mouth without me even realising. Lynne"

we are exactly the same. People are just being friendly. We are not that easy to offend. X

Just as long as they presume that I'm a friendly person, who doesn't get offended by light hearted banter, then I can't see a problem.

As I said, life's too short to let friendly terms, that mean as little to the user as they do to recipient, offend me. T

"it doesnt bother me one bit"

It would seriously bother me in the world of work as it is demeaning and disrespectful to working women ... on here it is not my preferred way of being spoken to but it is ok. Better than some namesI have heard lol

personally I can't stick being called Babes, or Hun. On the last one, I don't have any immediately traceable German ancestry, so it's wholly inappropriate!
