There's a new "thing" of ending sentences which aren't questions with question marks. I'm getting very confused (it's not difficult) You guys noticed any other grammatical deviation that's annoying or confusing?

Apparently, it's when people use emoticons that aren't on the Fab emoticon list.

I thought it was a thing too.

A bloke at work does this in his emails...looks so unprofessional. I love a bit of excessive punctuation but not in emails to senior management

I think it's something to do with site supporters & emoticons in messages?

If you receive a message with an emoticon & you're not a site supporter, it doesn't appear & just shows up as a couple of ??? instead?

That's what I've read/ believed anyway but please someone tell me otherwise if I'm wrong X

This is true. Trust me. It happened to me and I'm not one for excessive use of a question mark.

Getting a ??? In a message is a glitch in the websites code.

??? Is the tag Sydney university uses to monitor the usage of particular profiles they're interested in.

It's not just here I'm afraid. As one poster said above, I've seen it being used in emails when something should be a simple statement. I think it's to soften the impact of what they think is being too blunt.

It makes me too. But then I'm considered a grammar Nazi anyway as I don't like 'off' being used for 'of', 'loose' when people mean 'lose' or 'should/would of' instead of 'should/would have'.

The three ??? appear on my phone when people have sent me a text with incompatible emoticons and there was another thread about this a while back where I think someone tested it out on here.

Maybe they are Australian?

Whatever they say always seems to be a question rather than a statement????

I've just asked someone who was messaging me if they kept putting in questions marks or emojis. It was question marks. I'll have to get over it if it's a "thing".

Why would they put three question marks to a non-question?

Central

I've not seen the ?, other than the site compatibility errors.

But I'm really not a fan of inappropriately used exclamation marks. It's overused in the USA - having just had a few months there, I'm ODd on them!?
