Just watching Great British Menu and it showed pics of the medals given to various people for services to the country etc. It reminded me of a story i read this week about a black footballer (i am not up on my football so perhaps people can help with is name....first black footballer to play for Liverpool).

He declined his OBE as it goes against his principles and is calling for the honours to be renamed to remove the reference to the British Empire.

To be honest, i rarely think of what the initials stand for and just think 'oh, they have an MBE, well done them' but i guess for many the fact they are named for the British Empire is a big negative for them.

What are your thoughts?

Especially since the British Empire no longer exists, and the history of the BE, is not one to be proud of.

"

why is it patronising?"

You can do incredible generous work throughout your life, or be to of you field in sport, TV, film etc.

And then you have to courtesy to a little old lady who gives you a medal to remind you that no matter what, she is still better than you for no other reason than who her parents were.

Do you think that Great Britain would be the multi cultural nation it is if the British empire hadn't existed?

personally i think that is just some kind of inferiority complex to think of it that way.

I dont see how being commended and recognised by anyone can be patronising.

more people died under the British empire than any other empire in history. We beat the likes of Genghis khan the roman empire even hitler nothing to be proud of really. And in the last 200 years there has only been a couple of years where we have not been involved in some kind of war.

So...."

And Britain is no different from any other country..

The world was up for grabs and everyone wanted a bit of that pie.

It doesn't make it right, however the British empire did try to look after its subjects and when compard to the French or Belgiums, did a pretty good job of improving 3Rd world nations way of lives... Hence why so many countries are happy to accept the British monarchy for their own.

As for the whole mbe, Obe, my great nan was given an mbe for the hard work and selflessness she put in during the war as a spitfire lady.

That medal was one of her proudest possessions.
