Batman did not have a 'phobic association' with Bats. He chose the bat as his symbol because he believed criminals to be a cowardly and superstitious bunch, and wanted to inspire terror in them.

This tied in the stories of Bob Kane, batman's original creator and the Dark Knight returns by Frank Miller.
