Story on RT news has annoyed me a woman was forced to move seats on an American airlines flight because two pakistani monks refused to sit by a her because they are not allowed to be near or converse with females WTF. How do they get on in every day life in America then I'm sick and tired of this bollocks pandering to peoples beliefs when they are not even in their own country it will soon be time to say happy holidays instead of happy Christmas just incase you offend someone. Before anyone calls me racist I have pakistani niecees and nephews it just makes me angry that we are forced to change our ways so as not to offend others but they don't have to change so as not to offend us bollocks and they wonder why there is a massive social divide

Islam does not have monks

Pakistan is also home to a large Buddhist population, one of the worlds most peaceful religions but one of the 250+ rules Buddhist monks should adhere to is to not touch women. Couple that with the orange robes in the story and it's more plausible that these monks were Buddhist.

The only references I can find to this story are from anti muslim sites intent on inciting hatred.

I don't know the facts apart from the monks involved were Buddhist. NOT islamic.

Been a bit of a bumber for the monks if all the cabin crew had been female then wouldn't it...how would they of asked for meals drinks etc. RT is known for making sensational news from obscure half truths like this story..the woman was probably asked if she minded moving when she was given the boarding pass people are making judgements here without all the facts...only the woman can give all the story..

bigot I have pakistani Jamaican all sorts in my family I'm not bigoted I do believe however that when in Rome do as the Romans do if your catching a flight in a western country chances are your going to be sat next to a female passenger. Would you go to Pakistan for instance and walk around in a mini skirt and high heels I seriously doubt it you would respect the beliefs of the country your in so why should our culture and beliefs be any different

Just read the story that is on most mainstream news sites. I would think that when people book flights they should expect that women will be on them too, and explain before booking that they aren't allowed near them. If the airline can't guarantee an appropriate seat they should go elsewhere. It would be the same for a woman not being allowed near a man, he should not be asked to move for her. I would be more than happy to move seats into something similar or better, for whatever reason, but it would be nice to be asked, not told.

When you book tickets you don't always get allocated a seat until you book in. You could end up next to anyone; they rejigged the seats so as not to cause any problems. It's people management.

I do blame the press and politicians for the social divide and there is good and bad in all religions things do get twisted to stoke up the racial tension but I am a firm believer that if you go to a foreign country you respect the beliefs of that country at all times its no different here than any other place. I'm not a religious person I don't want Islam shoved in my face the same as I don't want Christianity shoved in my face.

He wasn't on board the plane when it happened. I was illustrating that people are moved around in aircraft seating plans for lots of reasons very occasionally to accommodate someone's religious beliefs however like so many things it's only ever reported if it suits someone's (usually negative) agenda.

Pretty bloody obvious if you actually read about it ( even RT , which is hardly a reliable news source).

They would have been Buddhist monks; ( orange robes.)

Possibly Thai Buddhist, who have stricter rules about interaction with women.

Because of their extreme celibacy rules; they may not touch women, or even receive gifts from women directly; they may only speak with women if they are accompanied by another monk; indeed; they always travel in pairs as they may not communicate with non- monks unless they have a companion.

The reality of the story is that the monks asked if they could be allocated seats on their own; if possible;

The airline was able to do this by changing this woman's seat ( note: before she boarded).

No harm was done, except by a bigoted idiot of s woman who chose to turn it into a racially/ ethnically charged issue.

The problem here is "Pakistani". Ignorance is bliss!

If everyone understood Islam and Pakistan are two different things they wouldn't automatically make the connection.

Having someone in the family or extended family, friends who's different race, religion, colour and gender does NOT automatically make you not a racist.

Ask yourself when you look at someone do you see their colour?

How do you refer to someone as white, black, paki, Asian, Indian, Arab, osama....... if so are you truly not racist???

Next time you want something clarified go to your local Indian and ask an EDUCATED person to tell you. They will be happy to talk to you rather than reading all the news and getting your little mind twisted and becoming a bigger bigot!!!

Or you can stay in your little box thinking your not a racist....

Had they asked her to move because they needed two seats together for a mother and young child I bet it wouldnt have made news

So long as the airline didn't split me up with who I was traveling with it wouldnt have bothered me at all, I quite like monks they are peaceful people and I respect they lifestyle, I'm not an expert of the subject but I know enough to have not taken the fact they didn't want to sit my me personal

Maybe during seat selection she had spent some time deciding where to sit. I know, I do; window seat, near to the toilets but not too near, etc

I'd be pretty peeved if on a Lufthansa flight, I was asked to move because of some Islamic holy men

If they are that holy, they can perch themselves on the wing and pray they don't plummet all the 10,000 meters down to planet Earth

But why are they boarding big metal birds in the first place? Aren't these the creation of the Devil and thought of by and constructed by the Western infidels?

"Airlines often move people to fit everyone in.

I dare say some opportunist hater has twisted this story.

She wasn't moved. They just changed her seat number before she boarded.

Oh right,so me imagining she's been dragged from her seat screaming was wrong then...

Dunno. Intelligence is thin on the ground on this one.

We won't know the truth truth until the film is out.

Actually, not until the sequel is out; that is when one learns the true identify of the father

There was some problems with a flight to Israel with very orthodox jewish male being unhappy sitting next to a woman. That story was a few months ago and apparently the airline confirmed it was becoming a more frequent issue for cabin crews. Guess the airlines could state on the tickets that women have been allowed to fly for some time now rather than having to take a cruise liner

"Story on RT news has annoyed me a woman was forced to move seats on an American airlines flight because two pakistani monks refused to sit by a her because they are not allowed to be near or converse with females WTF.

I thought monks were peaceful people? "

How about when men are asked to move so they don't sit next to girls under 16?

Should the airlines state on the tickets that 99% of men are not neanderthal rapists?

When did this happen? Did the men have to comply?

What happened if they refused to move because they had paid extra for the seat? Did the airline staff instead give the choice to the teenager to move elsewhere on the aircraft?

It's a common airline policy. I've been given forum bans for posting links before but you can Google "man seated next to unaccompanied minors forced to change seats".

well clearly i am a budget line kinda gal lol but i am sure that somewhere in the blurb it will state that you are only paying for a seat and in some circumstances they will not be able to fulfill your request but lets face it...the likelihood of it happening is extremely low.

If it did happen all they would need to do is refund the extra charge you paid for your chosen seat and maybe bung a small amount of compensation on there for your troubles.

from what i have read they did request to change their seats and so they were the ones moving however the airline felt the simplest way to accommodate them was to ask 1 person to move rather than a number of people.

They will need to also take my extra luggage for free since part of the 'perks' of the 'special' seat is a higher luggage allowance

But you could be right. It could be in the blurb that they have the right to move people

This has happened to me. I had selected a window seat, the other woman the aisle seat. We had both boarded early. Then came an elderly guy with a beard; dunno if he was Islamic or something different

After takeoff, he was moved somewhere else and another woman took the seat between us. I am certain he was moved at his request as neither the other woman nor I give two hoots as to who was occupying the middle seat

BA scrapped their policy in August 2010

The story I read was about Pakistani Monks; I guess these are Monks from Pakistan

The minorities should not get prefential treatment and that was the point. The woman who was moved has every right to be unhappy with United Airlines

What if in an emergency situtation a stewardess had to instruct those Monks to follow her orders. Could they or should they then ignore her too because of whatever their beliefs are

By all means, follow your culture and beliefs in your own country. But if somebody voluntarily wants to live in our society then they should conform to our cultural and beliefs. If that is not acceptable to them then they can leave and go back

That's your opinion and I agree with you on a lot of things but not this.

I think you rush to a simple conclusion. Matters involving people are never so black and white. The entire reason our country is one of the richest in the world is because of a history of compromises, privileges and inclusive values. The most uniform culture in the world is north Korea, let's agree that doesn't work so well.

You can say that everyone who doesn't like it should go back, but I very much doubt you'd really like the full consequences of actually implementing that approach.

Actually, I do and probably more than you do. With your Brexit in motion, I am planning to return to Germany much, much sooner than I had originally intended to

"Airlines often move people to fit everyone in.

I dare say some opportunist hater has twisted this story.

She wasn't moved. They just changed her seat number before she boarded.

Yeah...but you can't take offense at that!

We are letting the media distract us from ACTUAL news that affects us by biting at these kinds of stories aimed at causing hate, tension and promoting xenophobia

Who is 'we'!? I'm bloody not. Some of the intellectually challenged are.

That last comment was very unlike yourself. Maybe lots of people here thought the very same about you but did not put it in a comment; very patronising

As someone in a marriage that is a mixture of races and cultures, many of the comments show a depressing attitude towards minorities. In my opinion.

And who ever heard of Muslim Monks

The story I read was about Pakistani Monks; I guess these are Monks from Pakistan

The minorities should not get prefential treatment and that was the point. The woman who was moved has every right to be unhappy with United Airlines

What if in an emergency situtation a stewardess had to instruct those Monks to follow her orders. Could they or should they then ignore her too because of whatever their beliefs are

By all means, follow your culture and beliefs in your own country. But if somebody voluntarily wants to live in our society then they should conform to our cultural and beliefs. If that is not acceptable to them then they can leave and go back

I would be told the very same if I were in Pakistan wearing a khaki marl, shorts and sneakers"

Mixed couple it's certain from the posts above there is no compulsion.

Was going to write more but what's the point....

I would argue that our laws and values were created by a series of compromises between minority and majority interests and we are better for it. So I would decline the idea that it's as simple as one trumping the other. But we'd have to start another thread if I was to prove that case...

I did say, "minority wishes should never, ever trump our laws and values unless we decide to incorporate these"

In the case of this woman, these norms were breached by United Airlines staff. If you care to read the entire story (and if the story has been reported correctly), then this woman was not given any choice on her pre-booked seat allocation

Whether 3 billion people flying on fossil fuel is a bigger problem or not, at that point at check-in, this woman felt discriminated by United Airlines because she is a woman

Whilst I generally respect your views (because they are normally level-headed) I cannot on this occasion where my rights could be trumped by foreigners in my space. These Monks, whether from Pakistan or elsewhere, had no such rights. And they were from Pakistan, not from anywhere else

Re: North Korea; I agree. Not a model to aspire to

PS. I suspect that you might laugh your head off at this; despite the fact that I am on this site and do the things I do, I am deeply religious. However, I do not expect others of a different religion to accommodate my wishes and needs when travelling to or through their countries

Here's a possibility. Maybe the monks spoke to the check in person and said, due to our religion we are not suposed to speak to women. Would it be possible to sit us in a row of two or by a man, so we do not cause offence by not answering if a female starts a conversation?

I'm not saying that happened, but it is easy to see a biased fraction of a story and fill in the gaps unjustly.

That also assumes any of this even happened....

That is in fact, exactly what happened, the airline found it easier to change the seating for one person, rather than two .

They could have bought three seats under one name and that way the airline is obliged to seat them together. Just sayin' if it was so important to them. Why trample on someone else's rights?

Maybe, but we don't really know what actually happened.

We can never know about this or any other story how much of a 'spin' the reporter or editor put on it. Short of being present at every incident, we just have to believe what is reported but perhaps with a pinch of salt

This may resurface again with United Airlines response. The woman has not asked for any compensation. However, she has asked for an apology to her and to every other woman who travelled on that aircraft with her

Pakistan is also home to a large Buddhist population, one of the worlds most peaceful religions but one of the 250+ rules Buddhist monks should adhere to is to not touch women. Couple that with the orange robes in the story and it's more plausible that these monks were Buddhist.

The one time this was reported was when a man had his visa waiver cancelled by US homeland security because he could not satisfactorily explain his connection with a suspected terrorist

Question to you: Would you rather have this man on the same flight as you, knowing that he has suspected terrorist links?

If I knew that such a man was on that flight, it won't be the seat allocation I'd be wanting changed; I'd be rebooking on a different flight!

The sooner the whole world gets over religion the better we will all be, and safer too. It was necessary in the dark ages to try and enforce what is now the laws of most lands. If we want to live in a truly peacefull and safe environment, then all religion should be banned.

If that means driving nutters and extremists underground, so be it, let em stay there.

I totally agree! Anyone brown skinned now a days is seen as a 'terrorist' by the uneducated minority. Unfortunately it's the drastic and extreme views or the minority that cause the most damage, wether you are a white racist or a terrorist. Why are you wasting your energy on being annoyed about things that didn't happen to you?

I love how the BNP/britain first crew immediately jumped on spouting their anti-islam rhetoric.

And i love the fact that as soon as people call-out the facts of the story (Buddhist) most people seem to calm down.

(I also love non-sarcastically the fact there are a huge swathes of non-ignorant non-sheep who are sick of anti-islam/anything lies who check and reveal facts. And also those who dont care which religion-they have the same views either way!)

Some real gems here from the pseudo-Fab-intelligentsia

Pakistani monks are monks who live in Pakistan

Just as Pakistani Christians are Christians who live in Pakistan

And just as British Muslims are Muslims who live in Britain

Was that so complicated?
