Fingernail falling off

Jump to newest

I smashed my finger a month or so ago whilst doing DIY. 3/4s of the nail is dead lengthways and has come away from my finger. The other 1/4 is healthy and firmly attached.

I can't just rip it off, as the healthy bit will be agony.

Any suggestions on how to remove the dead bit painlessly?

Fabville

Leave it be. It will eventually sort itself out. Or go to your GP or a Minor Injuries Unit x

I split my thumb nail not long back.

I cut a teabag up and shaped it to the nail, put a few coats of clear nails varnish over it to form a makeshift cast.

Held it together for a while then it broke apart painlessly

You just need to let it grow off, which it will, but will take a bit of time. Trim the nail with clippers so doesn't get too long.

Leave it be it will come off in its own time.

You have to let it grow out so put a plaster over to stop it catching on things.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Does it look horrendous?

It will grow to a point where you can cut the dead bits away or fall off.

Yeah it's a bitch. I've had several nails go black after whacking them.

My thumb nail did a similar thing but horizontally from the bottom.

It took weeks for it to come off.

My big toe went into my heel and I actually heard it cracking as it was detaching itself.....I want down like a deckchair and was lying in the floor trying not to be sick for about 10 minutes.....I've never felt a pain like it...when I pressed it to see if it was still on the amount of blood was horrific ..it has now want a funny colour and is going to come off but is still kinda on.....I will follow this thread with interest x

It's black and flapping about off the healthy bit. It's my right index finger as well, which is my favourite finger

It used to be a very splendid finger. I hope it recovers and doesn't lose any of its skills.

I've had a similar situation before I just trimmed the nail back to stop it catching too much, keep on top of it and it should be fine! May take a while though depending on how much is holding it on etc.

And last night while I was cooking the tea I managed to almost slice a finger tip off narrowly missing the nail! Plenty blood and gore! Lol

A nate of mine used to put on a fabric plaster and paint over it to keep it a bit more solid. May not be the best solution for a guy though
