Body type for swimming..??

BRIGHTON, UK

I,m fortunate enough to live near the sea, just been down to beach for swim...

I use term swim very loosely more multiple splash and gasps..

Its so frustrating ,got this wonderful natural resource on my doorstep ,no matter how hard I try swimming just does not come naturally to me..

Yet I love going in the sea aaaaarrgghh..

Does body shape genuinely have a part to play...??

Be honest you Don,t see many barrellish shaped Olympic swimmers now do you..

Body shape probably matters quite a lot if you want to be an Olympic swimmer, yes.

For everyone else, it plays very little part. I'm very, erm, buoyant and I find that helps me because I don't have to put much effort into not sinking.

Do you find yourself sinking? If so and you're swimming outdoors, try a swimming wetsuit, they really aid buoyancy and body position in the water.

Body type doesnt matter,i got my ass whooped by a big fat guy yesterday,he swam through the water with ease it was effortless, its buoyancy playing its part

Yes I see some very large women with a very relaxed stroke rate who nonetheless move quite fast through the water! It's all down to technique.

I am built for floating. I may not be the fastest but my natural buoyancy means I am happy as a clam in water.

Dolphins have good body shape. Very quick in the water. Whales swim, they have a much bigger body shape. So I don't think size has anything to do with it.

I can swim, but like you OP I wouldn't say I'm a particularly strong swimmer, even though I'm athletic, swimming has never been one of my strong points and it doesn't come naturally to me either.

Yeah, but I'm not sure that affects the rate you move forwards. I look really elegant in my technique, I have a strong physique and plenty of buoyancy aids, but I just don't get the propulsion they do! I'm gonna go back to the coach and ask him why one day!

Body shape isn't important for recreational swimming. It is for competitive swimming. I've got a swimmers physique, broad shoulders and a long reach.

I'm negatively buoyant though so I tend to sink.

Good for diving but not swimming. Get yourself a shortie or wetsuit as advised.

It will add buoyancy so you can improve your technique.

As an Aussie Swimmer .... yes body shape matters

if a competitor swimner - broad powerful shoulders, small waste and lean legs ......

a long distance swimmer can be more chunky however strong shoulders and some "fat" can be an advantage ....

Playing in the surf .... big boobs are great floaters and keeps me buoyant ... giggle

It's worth getting some lessons so someone can coach you a little.

I'm trying to get back in to swimming a little but I've completely lost my front crawl technique and it annoys the shit out of me.

That's the annoying thing, I've got the style, the coach could not fault my front crawl, but I don't get the speed some people get from the same stroke rate. I always was better at endurance than sprint.

Most people can float although I have come across one or two that were more like stones!

Technique helps, leg kicks help keep your body afloat. As does knowing how to push your stomach and hips up towards the surface.

I used to swim competitively as a teenager, taught swimming and life saving. It's a great skill to have and helps to builds confidence.

Keep at it and try searching on the Internet on how to improve your technique.

Stitch your fingers and toes together.only joking its about technique most Olympic swimmers are tall and slender which makes them go fast you can copy the way they swim you just wont be as quick plus an olypic pool does not have tides swimming in the sea is completely different to a pool.

Open water swimming is a different beast to swimming in a pool.

My advice is respect the water, try to look for a local open water swimming group or triathlon club.

Try the open water swimming association

Or check face book for groups.

Swimming in a group is much safer, far too many people get into trouble in the sea.

The water temperature is just on the cusp of changing due to winter currents.

You can get a reasonable triathlon wetsuit for around one hundred pounds.

For a beginner it's fine.

Body shape isn't as important as fitness, also sighting is a massive part of open water swimming, correct goggle choice and knowledge of tide time's.

Swimming is an amazing way to keep fit but please do so safely.

Any questions please feel free to ask.

Big/fat people can swim well, size doesnt matter if your swimming as a hobbie, olympic swimmers swim that much they will burn so much fat it wont stay on them hence their shape, plus top swimmers need a good core

I've tried laying on my back and floating but just can't trust the water to keep me afloat. I hate that I can't swim!

Lot's of the local ow swimmers round here swim right through the winter months some without a wetsuit.

Guess it's about getting used to it.

My 6 year old can swim, one of the first classes I ever started her in and I'm going to put her all the way through to lifeguards as well, hopefully she'd be around if I ever fell in water!

It is pretty daunting to start swimming lessons as an adult but it's something I definitely need to do.

Technique is the starting point but even then confidence will always be a factor that will play a big part... If you've just watched the swimming in the Para Olympics then you'll realise no matter what your body shape belief and practice will be your best technique...

Body type isn't all that important unless you're heading to the Olympics etc.

FWIW I swam for a club and trained twice a day for a few years in my teens. I'm 6ft6 and have the right kind of body type for swimming fast.

All that said technique and 'feel' for the water are absolutely key and it takes a long time. There are very, very few really good swimmers as adults who weren't very good swimmers by age 5.

The Town by The Cross

Don't move your head from side to side.

Imagine if you did that to a boat's rudder. Wiggle Wiggle Wiggle Wiggle........

Head down. Body straight.

Big toes kissing each other as your feet go up and down from the HIP not the knees.

One arm high over your head like you are pulling a pistol from your pocket and throwing it across the water. Turn hand palm out and SLICE the water as your arm re enters and then paddle it back.

Repeat with other arm.

Blow into water on second stroke and turn head up to breath IN on fourth stroke.

You'll die otherwise
