Hi Folks

I heard a debate on the radio yesterday about who friendlier? Northerners or Southerners?

I came to the opinion and im saying this as a Londoner that seems Northeners are more friendlier.

Any opinions as to why?

I chat to people from all over the country and find the same elements of fun, humour, filth and friendliness everywhere.

In public though, the more northern places seem to be more chatty and approachable with people they don't know.

Where I come from dahn Sarf the people are genuinely lovely - it's too much of a generalisation to broadbrush into North and South and also unfair as Londoners skew the result for us Southeners!

The unfriendliest place I've visited in the UK was, regretfully, North Wales and in particular the Snowdonia region on holiday.

Lovely scenery. But I'll never return. Mind you one of the loveliest people I've ever met on here is from that region so you get good and bad everywhere!

With a few exceptions on both sides - I'd definitely say northerners are friendlier!

My view as to why?

House prices/rents up here are generally less than half of the prices in the south - and the overall cost of living seems to be less too!

I think that makes a significant difference to stress levels! In the north we can work less hours to have the same standard of living, and we're less worried about salary/paying the mortgage etc!

I know I'm generalising hugely here - but I do think there's an element of truth in it! I'm sure most southerners would smile a lot if their rent/mortgage was halved overnight!

Hi Peach

I think you are half right. Speaking as a Londoner. They city is so busy and fast paced we dont have time to stop and chat to strangers. And cos there are so.many people theres more"nutters" per population than elsewhere and theres a fear of meeting them.

This is a good question. Marc and I have actually talked about this quite a bit. We have travelled around the UK extensively and here's what I think...the north seems the most friendly, Yorkshire in particular but the entire north is full of friendly people. Londoners have actually been really nice, too. We found Scottish people to be more brusque. Probably the least friendly people we encountered were in the south east, Kent in particular.

But I think every region is nice in their own ways. Sometimes seeing those differences is more interesting than asking who is friendlier in general. We each will likely be biased as to what counts as "friendly" depending on where we were brought up, anyway.

The war of the roses primarily dealt with the house of York and the house of Lancaster. However, the power-bases of those houses were set throughout the nation - it was not a nothern fight. For example, two of the biggest players were the Earl of Warwick (most of his power was centralized in Norfolk) and the Earl of Salisbury. It was a war with a fairly spread-out power base.

I was assuming everyone was just having a laugh and not being serious. I hope so anyway I know I was.

A sweeping generalisation is just that. It's fair to say there's a handful of decent, friendly people everywhere you go, mixed in with the odd arsehole as well. Which you bump into on any given day is down to pure chance, regardless of whereabouts you are in the country. You only have to be unlucky enough to meet a handful of twats in a particular place and that place is c*nt city in your mind for the rest of time. If you're narrow minded enough to think like that of course.

People down here in the south east can be frighteningly unfriendly but they can be very warm an open too depending on their personality. I don't have much personal experience of people from the north and the Midlands but if I were to base my opinion on what limited experience I do have it would be that they don't like southerners much, any I have met have immediately referred to me as a "southern softie" and have been the opposite of friendly. Fortunately I'm not daft enough to assume that everyone north of London is like that.

I'm a Southerner who's lived up north for half my life, and would agree that Northerners are certainly chattier to strangers and more open. But nosier too.

The pace of life in London is such though that a journey of a few miles into work on public transport can be lengthy and stressful enough without the sweaty person squashed next to you gabbing on about Corrie/football/the weather.

We were brought up to be suspicious of strangers - the capital always seemed to attract the weird, wonderful and unfortunately more dangerous members of society, and eye contact was to be avoided.

When I moved up north, it was hard to adjust to the seeming lack of urgency everywhere - and people knowing my business and talking as if we were old friends! Plus the difference in the cost of living is unbelievable unless you've experienced it

I haven't had good experiences with North Wales either, been up there a few times with the Urdd and the esitedffod and if you speak English there they'll mutter something about you in welsh, then you can respond to them in welsh and that usually shuts them up!

I go to North Wales 3/4 times a year and always find it exceptionally friendly.

I dont really speak Welsh and, for the record, they're supposed to hate us South Walians more than anyone!

It's a real generalisation, but I think the south-east is, well not less friendly, just people seem more driven and focused on status. I just think people are a bit more chilled elsewhere.

That said, I find London more friendly than bits around it.

I disagree about them only speaking welsh to annoy the English, my dad, nan and grandad spoke in welsh in their day to day life with the only time they didn't was when I was present as my welsh wasn't too great as I lived in england most of the year. My step father also a Welshman (seems mum has a type) speaks in welsh to his mum and sister when on the phone its their first language in the north.

"Where I come from dahn Sarf the people are genuinely lovely - it's too much of a generalisation to broadbrush into North and South and also unfair as Londoners skew the result for us Southeners!

The unfriendliest place I've visited in the UK was, regretfully, North Wales and in particular the Snowdonia region on holiday.

Lovely scenery. But I'll never return. Mind you one of the loveliest people I've ever met on here is from that region so you get good and bad everywhere!

swings and roundabouts innit lol

as most of the people that reside in north wales have migrated there from the north of England (me included), the actual welsh people are then in a minority and start spouting the mother tongue just so people don't forget they are actually in Wales

I disagree about them only speaking welsh to annoy the English, my dad, nan and grandad spoke in welsh in their day to day life with the only time they didn't was when I was present as my welsh wasn't too great as I lived in england most of the year. My step father also a Welshman (seems mum has a type) speaks in welsh to his mum and sister when on the phone its their first language in the north."

I think it was a gentle wind-up mate. Hence the smiley (and my smiley in the reply).

Yeah, proper communities are hard to find in London, but when you do e.g. With a nice local pub, they are surprisingly friendly in my experience.

I was born and raised a Midlander, then spent most of my adult life as a Southerner and I'm currently a Northerner (yes, I get about a bit, so to speak). I was equally friendly regardless of geography and I always seemed to find nice, jolly, friendly types wherever I've lived.

But, I'm in a jolly frame of mind today so I basically think we're all rather marvellous.

As an outsider looking in, I would say northerners are definitely friendly. But that could be disingenuous, as when I think of southern England, it's mostly people from London that I have met.

People are people. Friendly is often tied up with how many of them there are to contend with in a specific area. I grew up rural rather than urban where everyone chatted to everyone. We had the time and the space to; when there's only one bus a day or you have to walk everywhere there's no excuse not to. Some cities still hang onto that but some (like London in my experience) don't because they are so full of people and so frenetic it would be exhausting to do so.

I think ultra busy cities has a lot do with it. When we visit France, Parisians are grumpy, but out in the countryside they are really friendly.

Is it the drag-down effect of London that affects southerners? The more they have have to encounter it, the harder it makes life?

It is.

I think there's an age element to it. People's examples always seem to be about interaction on public transport. If I get on the train here at 8:15am people are reading books, listening to music, generally not interacting with each other because they are on their way to work and don't want to. If I get on the train at 11:15am, there will be a group of Geordie nans who want to chat.

As a northerner who has lived most of my adult life in the south, I'd say there is not much difference. Go back 30 years and maybe you could say the north was the most friendly, but things were really tough back then, but somewhat easier down here.

But times are different now, people are more accepting and I'd say it's level pecking.
