There are many superstitions in our culture that are based on pagan, Christian or other faiths.

Which ones do you do regularly or know of?

Knocking on wood

Origin of knocking on wood is that it's a much more laid-back version of the ruckus that pagan Europeans raised to chase away evil spirits from their homes and trees or to prevent them from hearing about, and ruining, a person's good luck.

Throwing salt over your left shoulder to bind evil or the devil.

Black cats passing from the left is a bad omen.

I can understand both of you and respect that.

I'm just thinking about how they influence us and our culture.

Throwing the bridal bouquet over the brides shoulder to wating single ladies. Happens at a lot of weddings.

Not seeing the bride before the wedding.

My gran was so religious and every new year she would put scissors at the front and back door....at the stroke of midnight she would open the doors so it would kill the bad spirits....loved my gran but jeez hated when she done that x

We always kiss when going through a kissing gate. It's my one nod towards conformity.

It's a load of old nonsense.

I invented a superstition at school - that if you open a packet of crisps the wrong way up, that's bad luck for the rest of the day.

I tell my wee ones not to open their brollies indoors, but that is mostly so they don't blind anyone.

Kissing under the mistletoe used to be a lot more than kissing.

The tradition of witches flying on broomsticks (apparently) came from them applying hallucinogenic drugs to their genitals by sitting astride a broom handle.

My mother is extremely superstitious and I have no idea what was behind things like not being able to change inside out clothing to the correct way once it was on.

Those are lovely, Mistletoe has always been magical.

Now a days witches use other techniques for "Flugsalbe" (flying ointment) but sometimes the old way was the best way. What better way to show up for a forest gathering than naked riding a broom and feeling good. Hee hee

I also have also heard if a bird poos on you its good luck.

but I have heard the one with dog poo.

hee hee....I could think of better ways to get my Lottery winnings...
