Heartfelt condolences OP but as someone has said we all have to die, I have had dogs all through my adult life and when its time for them to go its sad , but I just remember the joy they have brought me. Chin Up

Big hugs OP but remember all the great times with your clearly very loved pet not this final time that's how I got through letting go of my boy. I gave him dignity in his final moments but it's the 12 years of unconditional love he gave me that I'll always remember xx

Up until recently there has been at least one cat (sometimes five!) in my life. But lost two brother cats young last year & decided to try a pooch for size. You have to remember the good times OP & also maybe what would have happened to them if you'd not taken them on and loved them.

I lost my beloved old girl scruff earlier this year and it broke my heart at the time, but I rescued her from a abusive home and the 5 years she lived with me and my family we the happiest she had ever been and that's what I will always remember. We buried her out back and planted a rose bush for her too

Aw bless, always a very sad time, but my advice is to go straight round the Blue Cross for the cure!! I lost one suddenly to a brain hemorrhage, went down the Blue Cross (swearing I'd never get another long-hair) and immediately fell in love with her six month old spitting image!!

I love all my girls....I'm a dog lover mostly had them all my life as well as cats xx but know how sad it is when we lose them, yes to old age but I've had 2 or 3 die of cancer as well and it's so sad to see

I've currently got 2 week old puppies,which are so adorable, and love picking them up and giving them cuddles,love puppy breathe

plus all there eyes are opening

Sorry to hear about your wee dog bud. I was inconsolable when I lost my last dog and swore I'm not going through it again. Yet here I am with a Ruby(my German Shepherd) and love every moment we have together. Please don't rule out saving another wee animal.

As time goes on you might feel the desire to get a new pet. They really do enrich our lives. I had to put my bull mastiff bitch to sleep due to leukaemia, I got another dog just over a year later.

It's so hard to say goodbye, they become a part of the family.

We took in an old battered stray cat a year ago. Well actually, he just turned up and moved in lol. He was very skinny, vet said at least 16 years old and had thyroid and kidney issues. We decided to spoil him for as long as he was with us, six months later we said goodbye

Even though we'd not had him long it was heartbreaking making the decision to take him to the vet for the last time.

Would we do the same again? Absolutely!

It's been nearly a year since I lost my cat. But I had 16 years with her after she was a rescue and although I still miss her I wouldn't want to live my life without more feline company. They were 16 fantastic years. I still chuckle when I come across pictures of her or remember some of the stupid and cute things she used to do.

I completely sympathise. It's hell when it's time to say goodbye. They do become a big part in most owners lives. It effects you deeply.

I've never had dogs but I did have a rescue cat who eventually died of a brain tumour...

more recently we had 2 domestic rats, called Bert and Ernie...they only live about 2 years anyway but they were great pets for my son. They used to sit in his lap as he watched TV, and loved being stroked and picked up.... they both died within 2 weeks of each other, which was very sad

I've had numerous pets that have died and everyone is always say never again then I remember how much love a pet brings and I give another one a loving home

My sister's ten years old Yorke died on Sunday and she's heartbroken

one of my biggest regrets in my life was not seeing off my dog nico, he was the family dog..but he was my dog more than anyones.

my advice OP is once things feel better, offer your love to another..maybe even one that needs a new home.

Had several. The heartache they give you when they cross over the rainbow bridge, still doesn't outweigh the fun times and memories they give you.

Still shed a tear for a 19 year old border collie, she was put to sleep 13 years ago. Still laugh at thing daft things we did together.

My eldest little guy is 9 now so started to think about the inevitable this last year. So during the summer I got another puppy

He won't replace my little old guy but at least I'll have a dog to comfort me when the time comes.

Can emphasise OP, we lost a young collie on new years eve and have only just taken in another rescue collie recently..

the hurt now will fade but the memories of the good times you shared will last a long time, the love you gave the little guy changed his life and that's to be cherished..
