It pisses some off that some are pissed off by it

Some aren't at all pissed off by it but use it as a filter..........I think that about covers it

I try not to.

I know some loveley people in real life who aren't great at either.

But I have to admit that on here, I'm more likely to, simply because the initial contact is through the medium of the written word.

I can tell you what does turn me off, it is when someone with bad spelling / grammar gets belittled / put down in the forums over the content of their posting.

I do think that sometimes it gives the impression of being lazy. If they're lazy in spelling and basic grammar then maybe they are similar in their overall personality and hygiene.

I'm a giving person who also finds it hard at times to control what my phone writes.

I'll form an impression whatever is written - that's natural. If someone couldn't make something coherent stand out then I'd be a little concerned that wed not perhaps be able to communicate that well.

But if people manage to express themselves on here then it's fantastic really. Imagine in the past, when it was all contact mags. How much did others worry about spelling etc then?

I'm relaxed about text speak as long as the gist of my intention is understood...

I'm severely dyslexic and it takes a great deal of effort to write......so sometimes I miss "stuff" when it's not a report or white paper......

It's just a medium to carry thoughts....

The Nazis killed millions of people, so it's really not unlikely that you'll meet someone who has a family connection to the holocaust, try to be a bit more sensitive.

After all, you aren't a Nazi, you're a pedant about an arbitrary set of rules which often is a proxy for race or class

Alleluia

The trouble is OP, it is often used as a sneering form of class snobbery. I accept that many people didn't have the benefit of my education, but that doesn't make them lesser people for it, or less attractive. To make matters worse, increasingly our English teachers are the product of a time when spelling and grammar were considered unimportant in the state sector, and so struggle to teach what they have never learnt themselves.

(I hope my 'Oxford comma' doesn't offend )

I just let it go. If people point out spelling mistakes, I like to give them a high five with the palm of my hand right in their face.

Yes, you can check I got the 'their' right.

Bad grammar I can accept. I can accept that people hit the wrong key on their phones as I also tap fast.

Text speak, it is what some people are adjusting to, it's being added to the English dictionary all the time. I accept it.

I wasn't really classing that as belittling. If I've written a post about liking people to be able to spell properly I fully expect to be hoist on my own petard for any errors in it, it's the way of the internet.

what about the people that pop up and randomly correct peoples spelling mistakes. What do they think its going to achieve.

I dont get it other than they are trying to make the person feel bad. I dont know what they think they are doing by doing it unless they think im off to copy it out a 100 times. Things like that could sto people posting if they where insecure about their spelling.

I don't like text speak or total linguistic ignorance.

But I do accept that some people find it difficult for various reasons, and also that even with the best intentions even those of us with good spelling and grammar make mistakes.
