Has anyone hired a stump grinder ? if so how easy was it to use, I have a massive conifer stump to get rid off, just had a professional around to give me a quote, he declined the job as he would not be able to get his big machine into my garden he recons it could be done with a small machine but it would be hard work.

Look for an artist who can carve the remaining stump into a nice sculpture and make it into a feature of your garden.

I so thought a tree stump grinder was something else entirely...

I had the same issue when I took out some conifers, I used stump killer left it 6 months then took out as much as I could by hand. I ended building raised beds on top

Er not hired one. Seen one working up close. They make a hell of a mess

I wouldn't like to see one work loose while it's on.

Just keep building a small fire around the stump remove a little soil so you are below ground level and keep burning it add some chemical to kill what's left and cover it over..... job done.

Spade

Lopping shears

Hand trowel

Saw

Start digging around the stump from about 2ft out.

When you hit a root either follow it, pull it or cut it.

About 3hrs later you'll have the stump up - it's hard work but it is doable...

If you take a flat drill bit, drill holes in the stump (lots) fill the holes with rock salt, and cover with plastic, it rots the tree naturally down to the roots, and leaves the soil in good condition.

Takes a bit longer, but its not as labour intensive, and its better foir the environment

I'd go with this. The hand held grinders are damned hard work.ive used my cousins. Not fun.

A friend used one but it was fairly tough going. How old is the tree? Conifers don't form deep tap roots, like hardwood trees generally do.

A neighbour of my Mums took a tree down and left a ten foot stump, the top three foot is carved into a giant Dodo. It's quite a novel feature of his garden.

Just dig the fucker up, all that's needed is a pick axe, a shovel and some stamina

lol How can rock salt be beter than the environment ( and leave better soil) than grinding a stump out?

My mate digs the roots from the trunk back.... chops them leaving a stump then uses his Japanese truck to ploop them out ...never fails

Yes, it does, but it's best to leave the stump for 6 months or do to get it to dry a bit. A green stump doesn't burn well.

The " improved" Swedish method is to additionally bore several holes with a wide wood boring drill ( 1") horizontally across the diameter of the stump as low to the ground as possible , and meeting in the middle . That improves updraft.

And more holes downward to meet them.

Pour some diesel or paraffin into the vertical holes and cracks;,let it soak in for a day or so; then light it;

Depending on size, it should smolder away for 2 or 3 days; even longer if the fire goes down into the roots .

I got rid of 12 large pine stumps that way . They took between 5-10 days to burn away.
