Change 1 UK law

So you've got the chance to change 1 law - what would it be and why?

I'd change drinking to 21 - let young people get used to going out at weekends and socialise rather than drink to oblivion!

Overhaul of driving laws with comprehensive enforcement - lane hogging, tail-gating, use of outer lanes when not overtaking. Penalties for repeat offenders including bans but always fines above £1000 and 500 hours community service minimum.

Restrict voting rights to those holding a Masters or equivalent or higher.

Reading the tabloids or getting your news from Facebook would also get you banned from voting.

What happens if you give everyone a vote?

On 23/6/16 a National IQ test was taken by 72% of the British population. Failure rate 51.9%.

If we had a referendum on the death penalty it'd probably get voted back.

Sadly we are no longer capable of rational thought as a country.

Remove the 70 limit and allow undertaking on motorways and dual carrigeways.

It would make everyone pay far more attention to their driving (which would then improve) and make the roads safer.

they changed the law over here recently didn't they? That if someone breaks into your house or wherever and you feel your life is threatened that you could use whatever force necessary to safeguard yourself which might result in the burglar dying but then you would have to prove how your life was in danger.

You actually think DNA is infallible? Do you know what percentage of convictions are supported by DNA? Are you mad? I could shake hands with you pick up a knife and your DNA would be on that knife that I could stab someone with. "In the Amanda Knox trial, the Italian police presented virtually no other evidence that the 24-year-old American university student had murdered her English flatmate Meredith Kercher. With no obvious motive, no witnesses, no confessions and very little in the way of circumstantial evidence, the Italian prosecutors built a case almost entirely around the finding of Ms Knox’s DNA on the knife used to slash Ms Kercher’s throat."

DNA and a perfect justice system. If you smoke and drop a cigarette at a place where a crime is later committed would you be happy to be convicted solely on that? It happens.

Everyone, be careful what you wish for

This increase in fine for phone while driving is only going up to max of being acceptable to increase revenue. Loose your license for 3 months and then retake your test or something which will actually hurt. During your 3 months ban spend time with 5 families who have suffered as a result of someone driving while using their phone so you become fully aware of the impact that a few seconds of innocent distraction can gave on others. It would then become socially unacceptable.

Firstly, I'm pleased for you. All that and yet modest and grounded.

I'd rather return to an absolute monarchy. If you submit to mob rule you're quickly going to end up fucked. Further to this people's online behaviour now reinforces existing political beliefs, Facebook and Google serve you what you want to hear based on previous browsing history and likes. Just one? So many need changing.

Driving laws need to reflect the crime

Prison should be hard time not rent free accommodation.

If i could change just one.....the government will be held accountable for crimes committed....with that law in place the houses of parliament would be empty

The 2nd Amendment in the American constitution was added in case the country was invaded by a foreign power or their elected Government became corrupt and needed overthrowing... it was nothing to do with people walking around with fully automatic handguns but are unable to tell us where Iraq or Iran are.

Our electorate only expose themselves to news and thought that aligns with pre-held beliefs. Anything that would challenge those beliefs is filtered out. We lose the ability to think critically because we no longer see the other point of _iew. And thusly our voting habits can be undermined. Ergo take away the vote and give all the power to someone like prince William who wouldn't want it anyway. "

I agree with the watering-down of our thoughts, by the reduction of news and the celebration of celebrity. The news-by-social-media thing is awful, and with the recent issues of the Facebook editing of war photography, highlights the overall power of the edit. Do the citizens demand the real news though, or they only have interest in X-factor?

"Caught drink driving once, banned for 5 years

Banned twice: life ban"

.

Research shows that using your phone whether hands free or not gives you about the same responses as a d*unk driver!.

Now they estimate that only about 0.6% of drivers will drink drive regularly however phone usage is at epidemic levels...

Given this data I'd rather see phone users banned for life than drink drivers.... Obviously both would be better but I've only got one law

I would change assisted suicide laws, fine that we don't offer assisted suicide in this country as its such s woolly area and debate that the bills put through the House of Commons are too vague and wouldn't achieve much anyway.

However don't make it illegal for someone to accompany someone to dignitas. Yes they have had cases thrown out of court recently but for people who are morning it shouldn't even get that far.

Keep gun use and ownership restrained. The USA would be better moving towards the system and use levels that we have here. A race to the bottom is not in society's interest.

"Everybody needs ID cards.

There's no need, unless there's some super state machinery that wishes to monitor and manage its citizens. "

There is now!! all of us need to be equal in the eyes of the law.

I have seen some stories in the press of groups of illegals using 1 guys identity

if we all can prove who we are, the dodgy ones have no where to hide.

I remember Hungerford that's why gun laws were tightened up over here. If people carry guns your asking for trouble.

Yep. And since they tightened up the gun laws in this country, gun crime has stopped altogether hasn't it????? No, it just penalised legitimate sportsmen and ruined a whole industry.

Im pretty sure we havent had any Dunblane style tragedies since ... Whereas the usa have school shootings on a regular basis

so did it eridicate all crime ... No nothing ever will ... But if it saved some kids from a psycho id say its a pretty good law

And as a bloke proved weeks after Dunblane, you can take a machete or knife and do some pretty nasty shit. What now?? Ban knives??? I'm pretty sure that the 84 people killed recently in Nice didn't die of gunshot wounds did they? Gun legislation stops absolutely nothing. But let's just wrap everyone up in cotton wool and get rid of everything that you can harm someone else with. But the problem with America is that unsafe people are being allowed access to guns!!

Can't actually believe that has to be explained to you "

The more guns there are available the more there are that can be stolen or slip into the underground market which would make the UK far more unsafe. The best way for the least amount of unsafe people to be able to get guns is for the minimum amount of guns to be out there

If guns are kept and stored in line with the current legislation there should be no/minimal theft of firearms as they must be locked away when not in use and must never be left unattended

Thanks for that wonderful advice, I guess The Olympic program of the Shooting Sports had their fingers in their ears when you spouted that nonsense off, or perhaps they are not members of fab

You are aware of the disciplines for rifle, pistol & shotgun in Olympics? perhaps not.

And in todays news, the UK has no army capable of defending itself in a major attack, true, even our soldiers are inexperienced in the handling of firearms, same as our police and even police firearms inspectors have limited experience of handling firearms which is laughable

Are you not aware that, relatively speaking, shooting sports are a fairly new addition to the Olympics and that the disciplines therein are a recreation of what would originally have been hunting (killing animals etc)

With regards to the police comment, I think in the current climate where the police force is getting hit with cuts all over the place and are struggling to keep the whole force in employment, they need to focus money and resources on the higher priority/likelihood subjects, which a major, large scale invasion of the UK is not.

Australia pre the 1996 Port Arthur massacre had 11 similar events since the stricter gun legislation put in place after those 36 people died there has been nothing similar to happen. In fact gun crime deaths have been regularly in the single figures per year since. Also a gun on the black market in Australia now costs $15,000 dollars which makes it very unlikely someone is going to rob your house over selling the gun if they needed cash.

If you consider the year 1896 " a fairly new addition to the Olympics" then lol yes I guess you are right

but I consider 1896 a fair long history for shooting to be involved in the Olympics

I am also glad you feel nice and safely wrapped up in cotton wool that you consider an invasion of the UK an impossible risk

The concern today, and it's not a new concern, it's been emerging over the last few years, is the re-emergence of Russia, of China, and the need to be capable of fighting a conventional war in the old style sense, as opposed to those in Iraq, Afghanistan and counter-terrorism

Manpower in all three services was dangerously squeezed and Navy ships and RAF planes had become used to depending on US support

have a nice day now

Well if you compare it to the start of the Olympics during Greek times then yes it is fairly recent, hence me saying "relatively speaking"

Also, please just highlight for me where I said it was an impossible risk? I believe I called it a lower priority/likelihood that other things...

If you are just going to fabricate things and change what others are saying I would say a discussion with you it's pretty much pointless

Licenses are re_iewed and renewed every 5 years however whenever you are stopped by the police/arrested and your name is put through their computer, they are notified that you are a licensed firearm holder. If you are arrested/convicted of anything, chances are they will be round to at least take any firearms away temporarily if not permanently

If you are just going to fabricate things and change what others are saying I would say a discussion with you it's pretty much pointless "

Do you also believe in the Greek god Zeus? since you are going back to the Greek times?

Are you not aware that, relatively speaking, shooting sports are a fairly new addition to the Olympics and that the disciplines therein are a recreation of what would originally have been hunting (killing animals etc)

With regards to the police comment, I think in the current climate where the police force is getting hit with cuts all over the place and are struggling to keep the whole force in employment, they need to focus money and resources on the higher priority/likelihood subjects, which a major, large scale invasion of the UK is not.

You do realise if the UK were to be invaded (very slim chance who would want our little island in these times) it would be from the air not on the ground.

The concern today, and it's not a new concern, it's been emerging over the last few years, is the re-emergence of Russia, of China, and the need to be capable of fighting a conventional war in the old style sense, as opposed to those in Iraq, Afghanistan and counter-terrorism

Manpower in all three services was dangerously squeezed and Navy ships and RAF planes had become used to depending on US support

have a nice day now "

So a few members of the public with handguns would make a difference?

If you are arrested/convicted of anything, chances are they will be round to at least take any firearms away temporarily if not permanently "

I am fully aware of the law and requirements for holding a firearm, whether it be for target shooting, stalking or employment and the majority of firearm holders in UK whether it be rifle, handgun or shotgun have not been arrested or are the involved in crime

I'm a rifle shooter, and have been for nearly 25 years. I was FAC registered for over ten of those, only surrendering it when I stopped needing it for the work I did. But, reducing licensing on firearms in the UK would be idiotic. We do not need more weapons around, and a fall to US style 2nd Amendment would be catastrophic for justice and crime prevention. The licensing we have no is nigh-on perfect for the weaponry needed for target, sport, hunting, and pest control. Why reduce the license for handguns or assault rifles? These weapons have no use but to kill people.

This thread is certainly bringing all sorts of crackpots to the surface.

Driving licences to 18, same as alcohol.

Prisons... 3 convictions for the same thing (serious stuff), throw away the key.

Migration, their own countries should be billed for a health screen, as we are seeing diseases that were once irradicated.

Tax credits.. Cut them. Its not right that people pumping put kids get more than someone working full time, while they do fuck all.

"Restrict voting rights to those holding a Masters or equivalent or higher.

Now I shoot an AirArms S400 1.77 with Rowan Multishot, at 11.7 with Field Target pellets. It has enough range and drop power for the stuff I do.

This is a very revealing thread...

The one change to UK law I would suggest is to amend the Road Traffic Regulation Act, increasing the maximum speed limit on motorways to 80mph.

I considered more significant changes, like greater corporate accountability for tax evasion and increased welfare provisions, but bigger problems are often not treatable with a simple change in the law.

"Loosen up gun laws and introduce a USA style Second Amendment Constitution referring to the right to keep and bear armsReally do you not watch the news with mass shootings going on all the time, its bad enough that the police are armed some have a shoot first ask questions later mentality.

Get your head out the clouds. stop being a tw@ guns are made to do one thing and one thing only if some nutter wants to jump in a truck and run people over your not going to stop that mentality. You can make guns illegal and it makes it harder for someone to walk into a school with an assault rifle and kill everyone in sight I could kill you with a pencil your argument is pathetic guns are designed to kill its that simple

A gun is a tool, nothing else. Put a gun on the table and it won't jump up and shoot someone. It takes a PERSON to do that. Not going to argue with someone who obviously believes all the hype and media shit about guns being bad. Have fun trying to kill people with your pencil. "

You smoking crack or something ?

Forgetting about the mass shootings in America ( bad enough !) .......what about all the accidents around the home with guns , kids getting hold of them etc , look at the stats , they are horrific !

Soldiers and a few well trained police need guns , civilians don't .

"So you've got the chance to change 1 law - what would it be and why?

I'd change drinking to 21 - let young people get used to going out at weekends and socialise rather than drink to oblivion!"

It doesn't stop under 18's drinking at the moment, so doubt it would make any difference.

The one law I would change is mandatory life sentences for convicted paedophiles.

Fully with you on the 80mph, but enforcement would need to be improved too. As you say the big things, that truly matter, are difficult to fix with a simple law. They require a change of mindset and ideal, both in government and also in the citizenship. Overburden of the NHS, expectancy of handouts, celebrity culture: they all need a mindset change.
