Gym - staying motivated

I struggled with gyms. Too old, too many people, no equipment.

What makes your gym great?

I know have a gym pass that let's me goto most gyms in Amsterdam. The only catch I cannot revisit the same gym more than once a week. So I can go to crossfit on monday, free weight gym on Wednesday then a boxing gym on Friday. The variety keeps me going.

Classes. That's all I use my gym for. Then I'm not the only one struggling and there are lots of people around all doing the same thing encouraging you.

I like to use the steam/sauna/jacuzzi after work out.. I think that's what keeps me motivated to go to the gym knowing I will relax afterwards... Lol

Anyone else from here goes to DLloyd in Dartford??

I've just quit. I went to one of those franchised 24/7 gyms (The Gym ) and it was so packed, between normal hours you had to queue to get onto anything.

The weights section was hogged by steroid heads who want to use everything at once and made it a "no-go" area for women.

I've just had enough.

Motivation comes from past achievements in muscle control, and knowing I can still do things like handstand press-ups, L-sits and other stuff like that. If I can do those a run 1/2 a mile I'm happy.

I have a brilliant bestie who is a total gym freak as well as Number One Chap who is equally gym savvy. They nag, congratulate and motivate me in equal measure. Also my gym, albeit way to much of a poser palace for my liking, has fantabulous spa facilities so I reward myself with a soak in the bubbles and a chill in the steam room afterwards

Finding someone of similar ability to 'compete' against is a great way to push yourself I find.

all I need for motivation though is to remember how not going and neglecting myself makes me look and feel. Didn't like that, do like this so you know, I get off the sofa and do something to ensure it doesn't happen again. It's really that simple.

A well laid out "free weights" gym, with incline, decline and flat benching as well as pec deck for chest, squat racks & Hack machines, plenty space in between and enough benches for more than one group to do same exercises

steam/sauna/Jacuzzi/swimming pool not required, just plenty free weights and some isolation machines

no hanging around chatting, just get straight into the weights and complete your routine then home for food

I don't know about Fab all about looking good. I look like Garth from Waynes world and do okay.

I don't go to the gym, I work out at home. My motivation is endurance races. I did my first one a couple of months ago and had to get in shape for and I'm planning more, it's a good for me to have something to aim at otherwise I just don't bother.

Running now, I started out doing the Insanity work outs, but they nearly killed me. They were good for getting me up to a good level though.

I like kettle bells, cardio and mma circuits- but I've not been for a while.

Gyms bore me, if I want to run or cycle I'll go around where I live there are some good trails with varying gradients so it's a good workout.

Generally I have the opposite problem, I train 6 days a week and crack up if I miss more than a few days. Even ended up going to the gym on holidays as it was a bit overcast. I have a before and after pic I look at, I'm not going back to the before part. The hardest part for me is sticking to eating clean.

This. I never want to go back to being fat! That's all the motivation I need.

This. Been doing the same for 18 months. I find it helps having a good relationship with my trainer. It feels like going out to meet someone notwithstanding I get put through hell when I go

Actually met my ex in the gym. All that testosterone flying around and women in Lycra, there was a new 'couple' springing up every other week. May have to go back to that place!

Too old?! No way!

The thing is, you've got to enjoy it. If you make yourself go for the sake of it, you'll hate it.

I enjoy lifting things up and putting them back down again...

I try not to take it too seriously because it can take over - its fine if you have serious goals. I got bored about 4 months ago and had 2 months off until i felt like going back.

What keeps me going is the way I'm changing now, I've tweaked my eating plan and it's going good. My gym is expanding and is run by good people and everyone is nice.

I go to an almost spit and sawdust gym - no mirrors - no people - it's all training

Twice a week with a coach .... Dead lift a few days ago was 60kg X 40 reps in honour of my 60 birthday next Tuesday ...

Motivation is about enjoying life and being strong for me ..... And having fun ... Love weight lifting X

Mwah

I've never really seen the need for them personally as I've never needed to lose weight. I always exercise at home to keep myself fit for work.

I've got a resistance band I use for strengthening my core, and I do a few inverted press ups with my feet on the sofa.

Good place to socialise though.

I just went on my first session on my multi gym pass.

I tell you what motivates me now. Dutch women with athletic bodies. My word I was gobsmacked. Finished off in a nude sauna.

I go to classes.

There's variation and other people pushing themselves, older, less fit, smaller all carrying on when I feel like stopping, which helps motivate me.

And on more than one occasion I've thought of nails or teeth tracing the lines on my stomach. That's helped me push on or walk past the confectionery aisle in the supermarket.

Going to the gym is just habit now for me, I don't need to motivate myself, it's just something that "I do" if that makes sense....

I run different programmes, and all the best ones will have some sort of progressive oveerload/periodisation, so you want to see how much weight you can add or how many more reps you can do of a particular excercise than you did last week...

Likewise. It's routine, habit and a lifestyle choice.

Fundamentally, I like how it makes me feel. The endorphin kick is great.

Hate crowded gyms and steroid heads like you said. Narcicissts with the 'look at me' look.
