Question for Fab gardening club

Have you ever watered your garden plants (mainly container) with grey water and was there any adverse effects? As I am on a water meter and very low income, I was thinking of this as an alternative to using water direct from the tap, I have looked it up online and there seems to be mixed reviews

As long as your using natural products for washing etc, then it shouldnt be a problem, otherwise i wouldnt recommend it for vegetables etc as you dont know what chemicals would be in the water, flowers etc woulld be fine i'd imagine

if you can get a water butt, then use what water comes of garden shed etc

Unfortunately I have a small courtyard and no shed and all the gutters run into drains in another tenants garden so can not use a butt, It is just for flowers though

Hi,

Never had a problem and I've used washing up water and all sorts.

I've seen Monty on Gardener's World using something as a filter before using it but generally I've just waited for it to cool and gone for it.

Great to get 2 uses out of one bit of water.

The Forest

Grey water's fine for plants as long as you haven't used harsh detergents in it.

Three tips:-

1.Leave the water in a bucket overnight and skim off the top inch or so to get rid of chemicals.

2.Filter it through an old pair of tights to get rid of big lumps that can cause bacteria.

3.Take the tights off first.

I try and save rainwater and even washing up water..mainly for roses (gets rid of greenfly)

I cant see any problems with ordinary plants..Maybe not veg growing.

dont use gray water for new seeds either. but otherwise go for it.. filtering washing up water is good advice... bits of left oer pasta in the water ect will go mouldy lol

Bath water and washing machine water are ok for plants. Don't use dish washing water or water from a dishwasher, too many detergents and salt, especially from a dishwasher.

Salt is a very good killer, if it kills s it will kill your plants.

If your'e not sure about how much detergent is in the grey water, dilute it 50/50 with fresh. Better to use half the quantity of fresh water than what you use now.

ask the other tenant to go halves with you on a water butt, and keep it in theer garden and both use the water from it,

you dont have to have a shed to use one, you can buy an adapter that fits into the downpipe from the gutter on the roof of your building, cannot be used on cast iron pipes thopugh only on teh PVC ones

The other tennant, does not garden, no plants what so ever, the whole garden is covered with shingle and dog shit lol
