I feel I should have been born in the Victorian era. Mostly because I like the style of dress.

Or late 1700's where I could have been a romantic poet.

"I should have been born in the 1770s, I have concluded.

Had I made it out of infancy I would have witnessed the French Revolution, the Enlightenment, the opening up of the world to trade, empire and colonisation...

I might have supped with Dr Johnson, William Blake or Hogarth or Bentham...

It was a very exciting and new time in which to live. I imagine.

But no Fab! Going back is all well and good, but only if you are one of the privileged few. Life for the vast majority was a lot worse than today, of course! Me? I'll stick to historical novels.

I'm no fan of historical novels tbh. I'm well aware that condition were grim for many and yet, as I say, it was an exciting time.

Perhaps a result of the French Revolution, perhaps a result that the English had had their revolution a century earlier (English Civil wars) but social mobility was growing.

You see, for instance, in the Royal Navy a meritocracy emerging that allowed for promotion by ability (these wooden resources were FAR too important to be entrusted to a syphilitic Earl with gout), and the middle classes begin their steady rise through education and the spreading of learning.

At the same time science begins to be systematised for the first time and, along with the printing revolution, ideas are discussed, religion, king and parliament are ridiculed.

And in 1814 (following the analogy that I was born in the same year although 200 years earlier) there would be opportunities for rewriting the continent following the final defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo at the Congress of Vienna, where it seems the victorious participants shagged and drank their way through.

Although I think I'd like to tangle with this one...
