English National Anthem ?

The proms got me thinking

Is it time for a Seperate English National Anthem and maybe a new U K Anthem ?

Dunfermline

England has its own anthem already. Land of hope and glory but for the commonwealth games Jerusalem was used for some reason. When England play cricket again it's Jerusalem that gets used.

England doesn't have an anthem that I know of.

They were discussing this in parliament not long ago. Not sure what happened.

The UK is the " United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland"

The National Anthem is " God Save the Queen"

There is no other anthem.

Any " country specific" so called anthem is unofficial.

( despite the fact that that is possibly the most dreary and awful and uninspiring piece of music ever)

SepArate - sorry!

This is constantly being debated in musical circles. Don't forget Rule Britannia or Auld Lang Syne. None of us particularly love our National Anthem. A little while ago I had to learn to play the Irish National Anthem incase it was needed at a do with the Irish President. I couldn't believe what fun music it was, even if I was less than comfortable with the words. So much more exciting thsn ours!

I think the two I've mentioned have a serious and traditional claim. However, Jerusalem is very popular, even though the words are utter twaddle! Of

course Jesus never set foot in England's green and pleasant land or preached amongst our dark satanic mills. And rebuilding Jerusalem in England? Haven't we got enough problem?

Land of Hope and Glory is a problem too. Musically it is part of Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March with which Elgar never conceived the setting of any words. Also, the singing only starts towards the end of what is quite a long instrumental march, making it very unsuitable.

Unless we become a republic, I'm afraid we may just have to put up with GSTK/Q. It is a world-famous anthem after all and several great continental composers used the theme in their compositions. It'll just have to do for now!
