faith in human nature restored somewhat

at work we are setting up reminisence (sp?) room - i work with extreme dementia amongst other things and whilst they dont remember what occurred 5 minutes ago they do remember the past a little more - we have put out local requests for 60s stuff - old phone, lampshade radio etc after searching so many charity and junk shops - and we have a reasonable response - makes me happy just saying

That's good to hear. My maternal grandmother had dementia and used to love war time music at the end. It can be a dreadful illness.

Good idea bringing in vintage items. Hope you get loads.

Have you read the story attached to this video (links underneath on youtube)? Getting an old record player and records would be a fabulous idea!!

I just love seeing this video, it's a real feel good vibe, and their faces say it all. And the tune really sticks in your head lol!!

we have some cds with war songs - one lady sings them all word for word - records would get broken i think - certain items we have had to decline such as the brass companion sets for by a fireplace- we deal with a lot of aggressive behaviour and have to risk assess

Menston near Ilkley

Music is the last thing to be taken by dementia. They might not remember their own name but will sing along note for note word for word.

It brings them such joy in a world which has become alien to them.

My grandmother went to royal London college of music where she got a certificate for piano forte.

When she had dementia she forgot us all most of the time but she never forgot how to play the piano. The carers at the home would put her in front of it and she would entertain the other residents. If the piano wasn't available she would tap the music out on her armchair. She died Christmas day 93. Xxx

There was a film made in the early nineties filmed at High Royds Hospital. It tells the story of three dementia sufferers. It is poignant.

There was a short series on tv a couple of months ago about a new approach to dementia. Letting patients live in the past where they were happy.

maybe fone Emmuas at mossley they get a lot of old furniture and nicknaks they cant sell on and may be able to help you

Slightly OT but..

My uncle was in a specialist home and they used "Memory Boxes" on the doors to their rooms- as they remembered little trinkets and photos better than they did their names. I thought it was a great idea xx

I worked in this area too and remember thinking (back in 89s and 90s mainly) that there will come a time when the pictures adorning walls would not be of Churchill or even Vera Lynn, but of David Bowie and Marc Bolan, etc...and eventually Kylie and Madonna.

Your post reminds me that that time moves ever forward. Good luck with the search for things.

They may not recall things for long but the feelings linger. A contented person with dementia is , for them, their carers and their loved ones.

we haveposters with photos on their room doors and their names and things relevent to them - eg we have a farmer - a postman so stuff relating to them - some families have made memory boxes and photo albums - one had the bedroom decorated and dressed just like 'home' - its a real comfort to him - some sadly have nothing so we do what we can for them xxx

What a wonderful idea. Definitley would help to make them more comfortable in their surroundings which is half the problem when trying to usher in new people and get them settled. Mind if I nick this idea.

go ahead - we have 2 lounges in each unit - one wth tv and a quiet one - (maybe classic fm playing quietly or nothing atall) - it takes a couple of weeks for a new resident to become part of things so we think this may help - we have 5 units in all so if it works others may use the idea - will tell you how it goes once its up and running x

If their rooms have the space, get family to bring in something of theirs, such as their usual comfy chair. Also many other non-spacetaking items. Pics/photos/paintings.

they do this already - rooms are bigger than average - some have a sofa in - chest of drawers - lamps - all from home

just looked at what emmaus do - if we have to buy it would be a good place to buy from as its putting somthing back - and i like that idea - win win
