like the back of my hand.

When you claim to know something well, this is a popular saying used.

But do you really know the back of your hand that well? Give me a piece of paper and I'd draw a hand that looked like any other, I wouldn't remember every last detail like veins, knuckle wrinkles etc. So it seems an odd comparison, saying you know somewhere like the back of your hand. Yes I have too much time on my hands (at the minute anyway).

Are there any other sayings/phrases that really don't match up, when you think about it?

"I can't be in two places at once" completely wrong statement at any given time yet we do say it sometimes
