What is 'athletic'?

Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

The man writing here.

I describe myself as 'average' because I am apparently close to average build for my age and height. But I am very fit and do brisk walking a lot, 10 to 25 miles a week.

3 months ago I started a programme of regular daily training and am pleased to say I've so far both lost significant weight and put on noticeable muscle, hopefully to continue. So at what point can I describe myself as 'athletic'? Or is that too implausible for someone of my age?

Describe yourself however you see fit. Everyone has differing views as to what passes for athletic so to some you might be, to others you won't.

It doesn't matter what you put really. What's athletic in your opinion, some clever dick will tell you otherwise

Put whatever you think your target audience wants to see. That's what many other people do. Fab's "body type" descriptions are the worst I've seen on any dating website, because they aren't mutually exclusive. Perhaps one day there will be a "weight" field. Then we could do BMI sums. But I'm not holding my breath!

Being of an athletic build isn't all that important here, fab is all about variety. Get some pics up and get messaging OP

I describe myself as athletic... I put pictures up and let others decide if my description is accurate..

I'd think if you're conscious of posting pictures and describing yourself as athletic ...chances are you're not ...yet anyway. ,

Most people will pay far more attention to the photos than the description. They're much more important.

Describe how you want OP. A picture paints a thousand words.

Athletic is neither here nor there. You can have athletic shot putter or marathon runner.

Its nearly as bad as curvy.

Athletic look and physically athletic are two different things. So I understand the conflict about what is or isn't athletic...which is why I just out my self as average so then people can make up their own mind how how they see me

I see it quite simply - do you look like an athlete?

To be an athlete you have to partake in a sport. Do you look like the "professionals" of your sport? If yes then you have an athletic look

Having an 'athletic' body description is not restricted to any age range. One of the gym instructors at my gym has what I'd call an extremely fit / athletic build and would put him in his early 60's. However what some may call athletic may not be the same as other people's ideas same as curvy BBW etc everyone has their own opinion!

BMI is a rough guideline, if you are of a type that is muscular you still come out with a bad bmi on account of muscle being about three times denser than fat. On a site like this its hard to classify body type even with photos because people will choose to show the pictures that make them look better. There should be more variants of body type for example I wouldn't consider a heavily muscled guy to be athletic and a bmi would class them as obese. But I don't think anyone I 100% objective when it comes to their size anyway and I think most put it down to how they think they look rather than what they are.

What would be the point in a BMI sum for someone on this site? My BMI is 31 so I'm obese. I know of people who have lower BMIs who look much fatter than I do. On this site, it's about looks, not health outcomes of populations.

What people really mean is they want to know how fat someone looks. And that's best judged with your eyes and a quick social meet if unsure, not your calculator.

Quite. An athlete may be a swimmer, a runner, a shotputter or a weightlifter. It covers a multitude of body types.

The only way you would know is from a picture. Without that, it is anyone's guess.

This thread has got me thinking, I had to go check it and I've currently got athletic listed on my profile. Now I like to keep fit and go walking every week (can't run anymore because knee gives out on me) enjoy cycling and do sit ups/push ups at home but I don't go to the gym anymore due to time constraints etc. I'm not super trim and certainly not ripped like some of the guys on here who have really impressive physiques (well done chaps).

I'm thinking I should change to average as maybe that is more where I'm at. Good thread OP certainly got me thinking.

It's completely subjective. A sumo wrestler is an athlete, but you wouldn't say they have an athletic physique lol

Some people are overly modest, others over-sell themselves.

Just pick one.

As you have no pics at all, I think regardless of what you write it will be ignored, most people won't bother looking or asking further.

Post something, for your own good

Fab athletic covers everything from morbidly obese to runt.

Low body fat, muscle definition and toned, able to undertake sustained vigorous exercise for an hour or more is a rough outline of one view of 'athletic'.

It's a debate that will never ever see an end, I'm 6ft 1 and around 11 st

I'm not as physically fit as I once was or could be again, but I'm able to have sex for hrs on end

Does that make me an athlete ?

For us it comes down to what image comes to mind when you hear the word 'athlete'?

For us it's someone who has a low body fat % with a well defined muscle tone without being overly bulked out. Typically that's a summer's or swimmer's body.

For others it might be more muscle or less.

We originally called ourselves athletic but changed to average after seeing some really athletic people on here

I'd call us a bit better than average but not slim or truly athletic.

I'm never quite sure what to put down on these.

I'm very active. Play football twice a week, tennis once a week, maybe a few other sports every now amd again and do a lot of walking.

Does that qualify me as athletic?

But then I have a bit of a belly.

Confusing isn't it?

I would say if you have well defined very toned muscles, eg six pack, pecs, biceps, then you are athletic.
