Do smaller cars have different suspension to bigger cars?

Had a lift in a small Hyundia car, and after about a mile I felt ill.. car sick.. had to ask them to stop and after I got out felt well again.

One thing i remember was the windscreen and roof were low, impeding the view outside, plus the suspension felt weird like it was needlessly rocking about.

Do they have different suspension to bigger cars?

I think your car sickness is probably due to the inhibited view. I always suffered car sickness as a child. I was always in a back seat, with no view. Even now, if I am a passenger and try reading etc, within a minute I want to throw up !!

The suspension is different from one car to the next. Even if you were to fit the exact same springs and dampers into every car, the suspension would be different because the weight and geometry of the cars varies.

Also, different manufacturers have different ideas as to how the suspension should feel. As a general rule though, the lower down the manufacturer's specification list a car is, the worse it will be. So a basic 1 litre Escort L would have cheaper components all round than the Top-of-the-Range 2.6l Escort Ghia would.

Also, and car that's designated a "SPORT" version will have stiffer suspension and a firmer ride.

Big or small, suspension varies greatly between manufacturers and even different "trims" of models. Some sportier specs can have stiffened suspension, whilst a Base spec could feel more wallowy.

Or you may just not travel well in small cars.

Just tyres can make a huge difference..tbh card with run flats and sport suspension are a nightmare over all but the smoothest roads..

I like a van tbh..high up..smash anything & keep going..cheap and cheerful too...plus youcan chuck a cement mixer in the back

It might need a service and some new suspension parts. But as others have said it will feel different !!

To reiterate the individual perceptions: my first car was a little skoda, it had softer suspension and I wasn't a fan. It ate up the potholes and speedbumps nicely, but the body roll on corners made me nauseous. I currently drive a super-chavvy corsa LE, it's got stiff "sports" suspension and a lower ride height, so you feel every single little bump, but the stability and handling on corners more than make up for it and I don't get travel sick at all.

The way a car is driven also may have made you feel ill.

Rough roads make me feel ill and even when I've driven myself.

So the rough road/suspension/motion all contributes to me.

Ok. I can understand basic model and top of range would differ.

But c'mon mate, no offence, but did you have to mention a make/model if car that ford ain't made for YEARS.

This ain't exactly the 1980's.

The distance between the front and back wheels will also have an impact.

I have two land rovers. Identical engine and suspension but one is long wheel base and the other a short wheelbase. There is almost 2ft difference between the two and the longer one is also a fair bit heavier.

The LWB is by far the comfier to drive in being much steadier. The SWB is much 'livelier' and bouncy on and off road. I always think of the one as being like a horse trained to pull a carriage and the other as a race horse.
