50 years of the credit card

You may have seen the television ad for Barclaycard covering the 50 years since they introduced the plastic fantastic.

There's a programme on R4 now discussing the introduction of the credit card. Women had to be older (past childbearing was the phrase used).

We're now tap 'n' go and many people have more than one type of card or even use their phone.

Do you remember your first card? Have cards been a positive change to money management? Are you still cash only?

The introduction of the credit card was the downfall of many people. The ability to spend money they didn't have was simply too much of a temptation and they found themselves deep in debt.

I've never used one and don't intend to.

The concept of card payment is excellent tho and I wouldn't be without my debit card. Security has always been an issue though and contactless payment is open for easy fraud.

They are discussing debt and the fact that people didn't and don't understand the responsibility of debt, on both sides.

1.6m only paying the monthly minimum.

Hi.......i like to deal in cash....call me a "luddite" but !!!.........booking flights and going abroad and the the fact that you claim on your card if anything goes wrong is comforting......

the big problem for me with credit cards and debit cards is the fact that that you are tracked everywhere........if you shop in a certain way your details are sold to a third party and you are targeted with ads.........the taxman has access to lots of information on what and how much you spend...

so really it's more the Big Brother thing that worries me........so if i have an option to pay cash...i do x

I have one for 'emergencies'and booking or buying something whereby I want the added protection it offers but don't run a balance on it

It can be a temptation though and I can see it's easy to get into debt with it

I got my first credit card when I was 19 and I paid it off once but used it again and still many years later it remains unpaid, along with the other two I managed to get somehow.

The good side of having bad credit, I can't get into anymore, the bad side? Getting on a lease etc is harder.

I wish I never got mine as I never had the means to pay it back or the concept of paying it back, I'm one of those 'oh free money! Thanks!'

I used to be a 'free money' person but never had a bad credit rating. I got a grip and paid everything off over 3 years to help my anxiety about what might happen. It is possible. It won't be easy but it will make you feel better. Good luck.

I'm a debt collector so very wary of credit & store cards. They have their uses such as booking holidays for extra cover or emergency purchases like new washing machine but I generally try not to use them. I could so easily go on a mad spending spree......

Not all men could get a card then but it was more difficult for women.

I leave my credit card at home. I spent nearly 4 years saving £2 coins for our recent holiday. It's not in my nature to go spending mad but I can see how easy it could be. I'd probably feel guilty & return it all anyway!!
