Such a subjective question,if its on technical ability then someone like Segovia is somewhere up near the top of the list,If its a matter of personal taste, then Steve Albini tops my list, his use of dissonance, volume and brutality floats my boat

OP's question was best guitarist, not the same as most talented.

Carlos Devadip Santana or Stevie Ray Vaughan

Id argue its the same thing if were after our personal favorite id say jannick gers from iron maiden but as far as the best guitarist (the person who is the best at his craft) you will struggle to find a better guitarist than knoffler

Steve Vai is certainly excellent.

I'd have to put Alex Lifeson forward for consideration. His playing is understated for the most part, but he knows exactly how to enhance, lead, and improvise within a song.

in the eye of the storm

For my tastes it would be any one of these three .

Jimmy Hendrix the man didn't as such play a guitar in my opinion he make love to it

Jimmy page put a truly great guitarist with one the best lead singers of all time with possible the greatest drummers of all time although one could make very good case for Keith moon of the who add a great bass guitarist and you have one of it not the greatest super group of all time .

Jimmy page not only a true great but also one of the most plagiarized guitarists of all time.

Slash guns and roses like Hendrix the man not only plays the guitar he make love to it raw passion like Hendrix .

I like Led Zep, but if any of them moan about people plagiarising their work, they're stake ting on thin ice .

Best guitarist is fun, but utterly impossible to be definitive about.

I've seen 9 year old French gypsy guitarists who are way better guitarists than Hendrix, if you're judging on raw ability, technical skill, knowledge of the instrument etc.

No I don't judge on technical ability a computer program could best any human if that was the case .

I judge on feeling that their playing invokes Hendrix was raw passion not only in his playing but also in his stage present .

Zeppelin live were the same although in the studio they were perfectionist live they were a different animal .

Guns and rises early years where the same raw emotion played out on stage .

That how I like my guitarists raw talented passion they drag you by force into there guitar riffs you lose yourself in the raw power of their playing Hendrix had that knack of doing that page the same slash to.

All the groups I truly love apart from Zeppelin are very raw or were before they got to big even early Zeppelin is raw .

Punk I love to for the same reasons raw passion nirvana the same raw passion .

I like my groups to be a bit raw just like I like my guitar players on the whole to be the same .

Perfection is not raw its lacks something to my ear prefer live work to studio work for the same reason when its come to my listening tastes .

Gary Moore.

Rory Gallagher.

Doyle Bramhall II

I have seen this amazing guy many times and he blows your mind with guitar.

Bramhall collaborating with artists such as T-Bone Burnett, Elton John, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Gary Clark, Jr., Gregg Allman, Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, Billy Preston, Erykah Badu, Questlove and Meshell Ndegeocello, Bramhall has produced several records, including Sheryl Crow's 100 Miles from Memphis in 2011. He also joined her on a tour for this album

In 2013, Bramhall completed co-production on Eric Clapton's 2013 release Old Sock, and played guitars on his 2014 release The Breeze: An Appreciation of JJ Cale. He joined Clapton on his 50th anniversary tour as an opening act and backing musician. He appeared at Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival, and was recorded for the subsequent live album and DVD.

Bramhall also played lead guitars on Elton John's 2013 album The Diving Board
