Last night when I was snoozing in bed I was bitten by a spider on my inner thigh which has really swollen badly I didn't think Spiders bite and not sure how long it will take for my leg to return to normal. Has anyone had such an experience with spiders?

Depending on the type of spider it can be quite bad. I hate the nasty little creepy bastards...i've killed 2 today and had a little panicky dance when i thought i felt another crawling on my arm!

the same can be said for most things that bite... I have a horror story about mosquitoes but I'll refrain from telling it here lol

I got bitten by a spider 2 years ago, i thought i had a splinter, my thumb swelled and went green and black overnight. By the next evening i had red lines running up my arm, needless to say it was a trip to the hospital and strong antibiotics for 2 weeks, and yes it was xrayed and no splinter.

I've just spent half an hour trying to convince my 4 year old that the teeny tiny spider that currently resides on his skirting board is there to protect him from the moths (which he's also scared of) and is looking after him.

He wasn't convinced. I don't blame him, I hate spiders.

Ive kept hot spiders as pets for years so have plenty of knowledge

All spiders can bite but unless you are allegic to the venom (all spiders are venomous) there are no spiders in this country that can cause you any real damage an antihistamine should help with any irritation other than that it will go in a few days

We have really pretty garden spiders round here.

We never seem to have fies in our house as we let the spiders roam free... Sadly they are less effective against moths

But on the subject of bites, just pop to your nearest supermarket for antihistamine, cream and tablets probably as that's quite a bad reaction.

If you aren't sure try to find a late night chemist and ask the pharmacist.

im a spider squisher too - but didnt know that the spiders we get here were biters - they will start coming in soon as it gets cooler - i collect fresh conkers and place them on window sills and by doorways - it does keep the numbers down

i have a relatively friendly spider i let stay in my place, however night before last i had an out of body experience whilst dreaming..i was at the foot of my bed, looking at my sleeping body and the 'friendly spider on the wall..he was about twice the size, then i got lucid, realised i was dreaming, laughed and woke up...yes he was on the wall where i had seen him, but he was normal size again...no tarantula growth spurt..hehee..most the time i just put them outside or in the shed...im not a spider killer..

Like you I have my window open 24/7, get lots of the big spiders coming in so just pick them up an throw back,but at the moment seem to be more the littler buggers around here in the Medway towns,an know 5 people who have been bitten by them.

I hate spiders I really do! I like photographing them mind when I bust out my macro gear and you have to respect their abilities in what they do and how they do it... The silk is spun from about 12 different glands I think and depending how they decide to process it depends on what it is good for I.e web or those mission impossible zip wires!! Apparently if a spiders web was as thick as a pencil it would be strong enough to tow an ocean liner ... pretty impressive if you think about it !!

The majority of natime spiders are incapable of puncturing our skin. Actual spider bites are rare. More likely a mosquito.

There are only a few spiders in the UK that bite and it's relatively rare.

Keep an eye on it in case it gets infected. If it gets very red and hot to the touch, go and get medical attention.

In the meantime, taking antihistamines and using Anthesan, a topical antihistamine cream may help. A cold compress or cloth may help with the swelling.

People can, occasionally, have very bad reactions to spider bites so if you're concerned, don't be afraid to go to a doctor, or even A&E if necessary, (as it's a bank holiday weekend). You're probably not overreacting.

How long it takes to go down can depend on a lot of factors. It could be a few days, or weeks.

That's a myth and was about daddy long legs and crane fly's. Common house spiders are the big brown/black fuckers and they do bite.

They use their fangs to inject venom (neurotoxin) which breaks down the tissue and they suck it up like a staw its how all spiders feed

As far as any being dangerous the brazillian wandering spider is the most venemous spider on the planet with an ld50 of 0.03mg/kg and at that only about 2% of bites are bad enough to require antivenom the false widows(uk's most venemous) venom is no more potent than a wasp sting the only time any spider is particularly dangerous is if your allergic i used to keep wandering spiders and widow spiders and always held them bare handed not an animal to fear

Imagine him/her bearing down on you when your the size of a silver fish.. but yes 9 times out of 10 The common house spider and any others thats usually around will do the same thing keep out of the way any false widows etc will get the boot regardless..

yes the jumping spiders are Indeed Interesting to watch wolf spiders come to mind they are formidable characters but only looking for prey species if they were the size of house spiders and could jump.. now that would be different

"Can spiders bite?

All spiders can bite – that’s how most subdue and kill their prey – but only a small number have fangs that are strong enough to pierce human skin.

Spider bites are quite rare, so there is generally no cause for concern if you see spiders in your home.

Of the 650 species of spider found in the UK only about 12 species have been recorded as being able to bite us and these are larger spiders. Of these, only 2 or 3 have been known to give a significant or unpleasant bite.

Symptoms have usually been described as localised pain and swelling. In the rare event of symptoms more acute than these, medical advice should be taken.

I'm watching a program about Brazil and the brazillian wandering spider is often found in bananas and transported around via the bunches.... apparently it's one of the most venomous in the world.. so the old adage an Apple a day keeps the big fu*k off spiders in Brazil ..is true.

"I hate spiders I really do! I like photographing them mind when I bust out my macro gear and you have to respect their abilities in what they do and how they do it... The silk is spun from about 12 different glands I think and depending how they decide to process it depends on what it is good for I.e web or those mission impossible zip wires!! Apparently if a spiders web was as thick as a pencil it would be strong enough to tow an ocean liner ... pretty impressive if you think about it !! "
Would love to know the science behind the strong enough to tow the ocean liner ..
