Why do some go for lesbians that look like men?

I often ask myself this question when I see a lesbian couple and both are "butch" look like men or one looks "butch" like a man and the other one looks more feminine.

Or maybe gender is a fluid societal construct and how someone chooses to present themselves is a personal choice? And if 'male' apparel and an outward appearance of being 'butch' is what they wish to do, there is the choice and freedom to do so?

I've been in relationships with women for nearly 20 years, and my past partners have been a mixture, I'd say some were boyish rather than butch..

It's completely personal taste, you cant help who you feel attracted to. A lot of people go for men with huge muscles, and in their opinion that looks manly, whereas personally I can't stand it and am not attracted by it in the slightest. Along side the fact that I don't wanna be stood up because it's abs and pecs day at the gym!

Maybe they're not completely lesbian and there's just a little tiny bit of their makeup that likes men. I clearly haven't got a clue,but it's a good point actually. My daughter is a lesbian and I asked her what type of girl she fancied,she replied I'm only 15 I don't know yet mum which is fair enough. I'm kinda hoping it's the more girlie type.

There are probably as many reasons as there are individuals.

Women could be dressing that way because they identify more with the masculine aspects of their personality. It's not as simple as "this is what a man should look like" and "this is what a women should look like". Gender is more fluid and less binary than that.

Others may want to deter the attentions of men.

There's also confirmation bias in this. You are noticing the more "butch" looking lesbians more. I have lesbian colleagues who don't dress that way, and people just automatically assume they're straight.

I'm more lesbian than bi, and only have life relationships with women - who are their own individuals.

I just can't see anything attractive at all in feminised women who dress up in make-up, lingerie and heels etc..

I dress butch one day and femme another..I have short hair..so what am I? I dress whatever I feel comfy in..sometimes that's slacks and hoodie and sometimes that's a dress with cleavage on show and full makeup.

I guess the simple answer is, people are just attracted to whatever they are attracted to. That's how attraction works. It is what it is. Whatever your sexuality or sexual leanings, that's how it works.

There's no denying you do see this in lesbian couplings though, and often enough for you to notice. I think all the OP was originally asking was is there a particular reason for this.

I only like men but i like to feminise them myself and turn them into 'women'. The thought of being sexual with someone without a cock doesn't appeal to me at all. Looks can vary, i like a wide variety of looks and for a relationship i'd go for personality more.

I think when women look 'butch' they actually haven't really changed their appearance tbh, maybe they dress more like men and have a mans haircut but if you look they are 100% female in their looks, they just haven't changed their look with make up or 'girly' things to appear feminine.

In fact, i'd say that most women - if they did not remove hair (especially facial) and did not wear make up and have long, styled hair, they would also look unfeminine.

By being butch you are probably more masculine overall and maybe some lesbians just like a masculine female.

When i was a teen, (so over 20 years ago), pretty much all lesbians were butch. They just didn't want to identify as female in the sense that you would.

Worth taking into account the way some lesbians choose the way they present themselves is political. I've known many a femme lady turn uber butch once they've started reading French feminism and loathe the idea of being attractive to men.

"Why do some go for lesbians that look like men?

I often ask myself this question when I see a lesbian couple and both are "butch" look like men or one looks "butch" like a man and the other one looks more feminine.

Thoughts?

No thoughts at all. People go for people they like. Problem?

Is it a problem to ask?

Not a problem to ask. Except it does seem a trifle insensitive and generalising.

If one person likes another, then they like them. It is not a mystery."

All I see is someone who wants to better understand a minority group.

The fact that one person likes another is not an explanation of why they like that person or what exactly it is that they like.

Only in world without any correlations about what other people deem attractive. I'm still waiting on you to explain the logical error with my diabetes analogy. In the interim I'll assume there isn't one though.

Which is not the case.

As I pointed out much, much earlier, it might be more pertinant to ask the question and then for gay/bisexual women to answer and for heterosexuals to fall silent.

If what you've just said doesn't complain an implicit assumption that straight people can't explain gay behaviour then one of us doesn't understand the English language.

How can you explain attraction? It is an emotional response. There is no logic to it.

It's pretty easy to explain attraction. For example, the general consensus is that facial symmetry is attractive, the theory is that its subconsciously associated with good genes.

There are other trends with male height and women's hip to waist ratio for example.
