...Up on the Downs

Now they're safely down - anyone else think it was a really dumb idea to put all our Olympic athletes on one plane, publish it's flight plan, and even paint a gold target on it's nose!!!

To be fair I'd have been tempted to have chartered my own flight... just. In. Case...

Not really. I'm assuming the security was tight.

Not sure how security would stop a land to air missile from shooting down a jumbo jet

Where would that be fired from then? The middle of the Atlantic?

It has. Just most terrorist's are farmer's with guns.

Maybe if it had to fly over chechnya, but terrorists don't generally own warships.

Most terrorists are farmers with guns??not sure it would take a warship, if something can be fired from the ground it can easily be fired from a decent sized boat

It's OK, you're right tho, no plane would ever be taken down over an ocean without a battleship

I'm not sure a plane full of athletes is really a target for anybody, however,if it had been a plane full of the world's top scientists all heading to a secret conference somewhere after discovering a cure for a terrible disease then it may be a different scenario.

Most of the 'terrorist attacks' we have seen so far are executed to bring widespread panic to the streets and disarray to our every day lives.

A plane (and I mean no disrespect at all by the following) full of athletes going down in the ocean somewhere would really be very sad indeed but wouldn't really affect, as individuals, our every day lives that much.

This is why most attacks happen at ground level.

To the terrorists, yes. To them hitting a plane full of household names, celebrities, is a bigger target than hitting a plane fill of holiday makers. Gets them more more coverage. Stirs up more hatred.

I'd be inclined to disagree with this. The public would feel more threatened by the death of normal people going about their every day lives; going shopping, boarding a train, going to a concert etc. It's something we can all relate to and it would give us the feeling that it could happen to any one of us at any time.

I don't think that is true, the object of most terrorists is to make ordinary people frightened not just angry. that's why they like to hit ordinary tourists.

If there was any danger it was in the stadiums, not the plane home.

anyhow they made it

I think that's a tad bit simplified. They have as many agendas as they do factions. Propaganda is a broad sweeping word but basically it's to draw attention. This can be done in many ways. They will even make claims of involvement when the had nothing to do with it - often it has been shown.

The are using easy targets because of resources, access and security factors.

Blowing that plane or any one of the others out of the sky would have been a publicity propaganda coup of immense proportions. I'd say it had been thought of.....just not easily executable.

they aren't wanted by the CIA, too valuable alive to the country, to be bumped off. political agenda wouldn't prosper, if they got shot out of the sky. probably the safest plane in the air today...

Actually even for trained military a plane at 40,000 feet up somewhere over the Atlantic is a very small target. so getting shot down isn't much of a risk except at take off and landing.

Far more likely that someone will doctor the in flight champagne with banned drugs to get them barred from the next olympics

Yes, I was watching that 'Skies of Britain' a couple of days ago where all incoming Gatwick flights were put on a holding pattern because of an undentified, unresponsive aircraft flying in Gatwick airspace.....it turned out they were a ligit flight not answering because of a passenger emergency!

Terrorism aside, someone said they wondered if Manchester United ever put their whole squad on one flight again after the Munich disaster? My granny always warned about putting too many eggs in one basket...

That's why they never fly the USA leader and his deputy on the same flight, just in case
