so 3 weeks today we get the chance to change the electoral system for our country.....

have you decided how you are going to vote in the AV referendum yet?

(the type of AV on the ballot is exactly the same type of AV they use to elect the london mayor)

I am leaning towards voting yes......

...but then I also want Boris to be President of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Island as well, so my grasp of politics may be a bit unreliable...

It's a no from me Fabio, what a shame the referendum is either a yes or no choice, how ironic that a yes vote would allow you to choose your canditates in order of preference, one would have thought it would have made more sense for the referendum on AV to be in the AV format??????

Anyway, I don't believe Av is the better alternative so that is why I am voting no, not because I believe in first past the post.

It's all semantics. Basically it'll still boil down to a choice between three self-serving tosspots who will continue to do what their bosses in the City and the European Parliament tell them to do.

I wonder how it became known as 'first past the post' when the person elected doesn't have to get past the post; s/he just has to be closer to the post than anyone else.

Id lean on Yes as forcing the road of some change is worth a go - and it can always go back again in time

I tend to think a PR based system has got to be tried as it allows all votes to count and get a chance for all ideas to be heard

and yep that includes the BNP and the lower leagues of politics perhaps

but in a democracy where you have a bin the second place which can translate into bin the opinion of near half a constituency is a bit hmmmm old

My problem with AV is that it will be very easy to manipulate a vote - and I think one vote for one election is quite enough - with AV it depends on which order you put your various selections on how many times your vote is counted and it can't be right that some peoples votes are counted more times... more often than not it will turn out that no party gets 50% of the vote so we will have endless coalitions which means that any manifesto promises can be binned as they can blame the other party in the coalition... I don't see what's wrong with the party who gets the most votes winning - if the population of this country got off their backsides and actually voted it would make it a lot more legitimate - I think the average turnout is only somewhere round 40%.... the amount of people who whinge about the government but then come out with lines like 'oh I didn't vote - it doesn't make any difference' really bugs me!

No. It made perfect sense to me.

Until AV can unambiguously (puts his teeth back in)demonstrate a benefit over the current system, I'm voting no.

I believe a yes vote for AV, would be the first step towards PR.

There's no question that what Clegg hopes it will be - despite his assertion before the election that it's "miserable little compromise".

I suppose Clegg saying one thing and doing another is nothing new.

Most of todays "ordinary"folk who just pop along to vote when informed there is one taking place will no doubt find the AV selection very very confusing.

There are many many people who have no interest in todays politics and this will bamboozle them even more.

One member, one vote is straight forward enough for most people. why change it ?

Back in 2007 there were Scottish Parliament elections - that's two ballot papers - and local government elections on the same day. As I recall the local election was held using a different system for the first time.

It was chaos. Over 140,000 ballot papers were rejected by Returning Officers. That's about 7% of all votes cast.

if av means more coalition governments and the limp debs throwing away there manifesto in order to gain power (or be a tory lap dog )i'll be voting no.the only chance the limp debs of getting power is by av nobody is stupid enough to let these baffoons run the country and thankfully after the yr they have spent in office the game is up for these clowns and they will be unelectable for another 50 yrs.clegg sold out his party and the party will pay dearly for it
